Lyra Keres works as a clerk for the Order of Thieves in San Francisco. Zeus cursed her as a newborn, declaring no one would ever love her. This curse left her abandoned by her parents and isolated her entire life.

She harbors a secret crush on Boone Runar, a master thief in her den. On the eve of the Crucible, Chance publicly humiliates her about this crush. Enraged, Lyra heads to Zeus’ temple to hurl a rock and demand the curse be broken.

Hades intercepts her. Intrigued by her fearlessness and curse, he lets her go. Later that night, during the champion selection ceremony, Hades appears for the first time in Crucible history. He selects Lyra as his champion.

In The Games Gods Play, author Abigail Owen sends Lyra to Olympus, where she meets the other champions. Hades offers her a private deal: win the Crucible, and he will remove her curse. The twelve labors begin.

In Poseidon’s Labor, Lyra frees herself and others from freezing sea caves using her relic axe. She plants dragon teeth given by Boone to summon skeleton warriors against sea monsters. Demeter’s champion, Diego Perez, wins the first labor. Poseidon’s champion dies horrifically in Lyra’s arms.

Hermes’ Labor forces champions to solve a riddle while perched on shrinking cliff ledges. Lyra works with Zai Aridam, who solves the puzzle and rescues her with winged sandals.

Dionysus’ Labor requires transporting vodka through a poison ivy-filled cave. Lyra sacrifices her chances by using a pomegranate seed pearl to teleport a dying Meike Besser to safety. Hades is punished for this loophole.

Lyra and Hades grow closer during the games. She learns Persephone is alive but trapped in Tartarus. Hades entered the Crucible to gain the power to free her.

During Hephaestus’ Labor, Boone joins Lyra. A metal tentacle strikes him, and he falls to his death. Devastated, Lyra vows to win. Hades reveals he can resurrect Boone as a god if he becomes King of Olympus.

Athena’s Labor descends into horror. A glamoured Dex Soto murders Meike Besser. Zai kills Dex in self-defense. Diego wins again, holding the lead.

The final Labor takes place in Death Valley. Zeus changes the rules: finishing first counts as three wins. Lyra discovers the Sirens cannot sense her because Zeus’ curse makes her unlovable.

She frees her captured allies instead of winning. Zeus, enraged, strikes her with lightning. As she dies, Hades abdicates his Underworld crown to her. She becomes the new Queen of the Underworld and wins the Crucible.

Hades becomes King of Olympus and resurrects Boone as the god of thieves. The story ends with Hades and Lyra opening Tartarus to rescue Persephone. Lyra remembers a prophecy showing Hades burning down the world.

Quotes from The Games Gods Play

“The gods love to toy with us mere mortals. And every hundred years…we let them.”

“I am a pawn in the gods’ petty games, and a throne is at stake.”

“We’re not butterflies to you,” I whisper. “We’re eternity.”

“But make no mistake, Lyra. I want you to be mine. Not a champion. Not a thief. Not a mortal. Mine.”

“I’m saying that if you use that phrase to define your family, then you shouldn’t be surprised if sometimes they try to pull you under.”
