Boarding Day in Piraeus
September 2019. The MS Black Orchid, a brand-new fifteen-deck flagship, departs Piraeus for a nine-day cultural cruise across the Aegean.
Poppy Buchanan, a middle-aged caregiver from the UK, has just been hired as personal assistant to Lillith Ravenscroft McGregor, a one-eyed widow who walks with a heavy limp and cane.
Poppy landed the job after finding the body of Lillith’s husband, Scottish media magnate Angus McGregor, on New Year’s Day — and she quietly plots to earn a place in the widow’s will.
Lillith, meanwhile, is dying of ALS. She fills a notebook titled Companion Workbook to the Gentle Art of Dying Well with objectives she intends to complete before the end.
Other VIPs board with their own agendas. Patrick McGregor, Angus’s disinherited son, travels with his fiancée Lady Arrabella Fairfax, who engineered the trip to force a reconciliation — or a settlement. Arrabella already suspects Poppy poisoned Angus.
Dr. Gideon Marsh, the world-famous retired FBI mind hunter, comes aboard as guest lecturer with his daughter Sarah and grandson Carter, eight, who keeps a “List of Suspicious Happenings to Be Investigated by Carter J. Frost.”
Below decks, VIP concierge Roshaan DaSousa plants hidden cameras in the Sky Villas at the urging of her boyfriend, ship mentalist Theo Pappas.
Theo plans to mine the footage for secrets to blackmail wealthy guests and pay off Moldovan gangsters.
An elderly man checks into an elite suite under the name Hendrick Lodewijk, traveling on an Indonesian-Dutch passport.

Suspicions at Sea
Carter snoops through his grandfather’s files and learns Marsh is tracking Vincent Kapoor, the 1970s serial killer called “The Bikini Killer” or “The Serpent,” who drugged, robbed, and murdered young travelers across Thailand, India, and Nepal with his accomplice Aline-Claire Lavoie.
Matching old photographs to passengers, Carter realizes “Lodewijk” is Kapoor, recently released from a Nepalese prison — and shares the discovery with Poppy.
In port at Chania, Crete, Arrabella digs into Poppy’s background.
Archived articles show Poppy was once Helen Doyle, acquitted of murdering her abusive husband Paz, who died of digitalis toxicity — the same substance found in Angus’s system. Arrabella hires Avi Galev, posing as a private investigator, to get proof; he is in fact working for Lillith and her legal team.
Patrick and Arrabella then have a furious row on Crete.
Patrick reveals he is not Angus’s biological son, wants no inheritance fight, and calls her a transactional vulture.
Soon after, Arrabella suffers a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction to shellfish on the beach, is revived by a Danish paramedic, and misses the re-boarding — stranded ashore.
The Taverna Revelation
In a quiet taverna, Lillith dismantles Poppy’s emotional defenses. She is Aline-Claire Lavoie, Kapoor’s former accomplice — and Poppy’s biological mother.
After fleeing Vincent in Thailand, she found herself pregnant, abandoned the newborn in a London police phone box near a specialist obstetrics hospital, and rebuilt herself as war photographer Lillith Ravenscroft.
The serial killer sailing under a false passport is Poppy’s biological father.
Lillith arranged the entire cruise: to confront Vincent, pass information about his missing victims to Marsh and the grieving families, and then end both his life and her own.
Back aboard, Avi uncovers Theo’s camera network, forces Roshaan to confess the extortion plot, and confiscates every laptop and flash drive.
Masks, Mayday, and the Sinking
In the Santorini caldera, amid rising katabatic gales, guests gather for Theo’s “Moonlight & Mentalism Soiree” wearing beaten-metal masks of Greek myth — Lillith as Circe, Poppy as the Harpy, Patrick as Echo, Vincent as Hermes, Avi as Thanatos. Theo’s act publicly strips Poppy and Patrick of their deepest secrets.
At intermission, Theo steps out to vape and is cornered by Avi.
Carter, wandering the deck in a Satyr mask, witnesses the standoff — and Theo seizes the boy, dangling him over the railing above the raging sea.
Marsh wrestles his grandson back onto the deck, then collapses with a fatal heart attack.
The man-overboard alarm sends Captain Sophia Bellini into an emergency manual turn, but downslope winds slam the unpowered broadside onto an uncharted volcanic reef.
Sharp rock tears open four watertight compartments, the engine rooms flood, and the ship suffers a complete blackout.
Below, in front of the mural Reflections of Arrogance, Lillith kills Vincent with a lethal dose of digitalis from an injection pen — then takes a fatal dose herself, completing her Death List.
Above, Patrick finds Carter and Sarah, secures them onto a functional starboard lifeboat, and goes back for Poppy.
Portside boats are crushed as the Black Orchid capsizes and sinks along an undersea volcanic ridge.
After the Wreck
Rescue vessels, fishing boats, and helicopters carry survivors to Santorini.
On the dock, Avi delivers Lillith’s final arrangement to Poppy: the widow liquidated her entire fortune into two trusts, one giving Patrick control of the media company, one leaving Poppy immensely wealthy.
Years later, the documentary series IT’S CRIMINAL: The Mystery of the Black Orchid, hosted by journalist Trinity Scott, lays out the full story.
Poppy — now going by her adoptive name Helen Harrington — has married Patrick, and together they fund “Poppy’s Umbrella,” a global foundation offering shelter and legal help to abused women and children.
Arrabella has taken an executive role at Élan Magazine in New York.
Divers descend to the wreck in the caldera and find Lillith and Vincent lying side by side in the silt beneath the mural, her ornate cane, medical pens, and the Hermes mask beside them.
In her final interview for the series, Helen publicly confirms her true identity — honoring Lillith’s last wish and giving Kapoor’s victims’ families their answers.
