Four months before the present, Tarantula kidnapped Zora’s mother and murdered her best friend, Aurora.
The war behind it all spans the realm of Antichthon: the Democratic Commonwealth of Westmere versus the autocratic Draconis Empire, separated by impassable oceans.
Centuries earlier, a blue fog called the Mist shut down modern technology, so the Storm Wars are fought with Royal Mage storms against Commonwealth Shields.
Grief turns into action. Zora tracks the assassin into the Barren Forest, stabs him with a bone dagger, and hauls him before the Commonwealth council, where her capture portrait goes famous.
She enlists in the Crimson Army as Recruit Number Six at the Scorpion Hole desert base and demands the Iron Ritual, a blood trial that forges defensive Knight Mages like the twins Ella and Axel.
Zora survives—but as a Royal Mage with water and storm magic, the enemy Empire’s own brand of power.

He does. After cutting down a horde of pirates, Zora watches Tarantula arrive on horseback—and the Emperor’s flagship glide into port, towed through the ocean by the dragon Plague.
On that deck, The Emperor’s Enemy plays its hand: “Tarantula” is Aleksander the Sadistic himself. He dyed his hair, mutilated his own neck to hide Zora’s dagger scar, and forced his real Royal Mage to serve as a body double.
Aleksander confesses the obsession and names Zora his syxzal—his bonded Fae soulmate. The shock collar, he admits, never contained his full power.
Summoning liquid platinum wings, he tries to carry her on Plague to his castle, Palladium.
Instead, Reeves’ trap springs: a target designator arrowhead Zora secretly fixed to Plague’s scales guides a Commonwealth fusion missile through the Mist, and the dragon dies in fire.
Chained together, Zora and Aleksander fall into the mud.
