A River Enchanted Summary: The Full Plot

Spoiler warning: This summary includes the ending and major reveals.

Jack Tamerlaine has spent a decade on the mainland. A letter claiming to be from his laird brings him back to the Isle of Cadence.

He discovers the letter was forged by Adaira, the heiress of the East and his childhood rival. She tells him that girls have been vanishing from the island.

Jack begins studying dangerous ballads left by Adaira’s late mother, Lorna. He and Adaira summon water and earth spirits to ask about the missing girls.

The spirits refuse to give a straight answer. They say a higher power forbids them from speaking the truth. Jack also learns that playing for spirits causes physical damage, including bleeding and headaches.

Meanwhile, Captain Torin Tamerlaine and his wife Sidra face their own crisis. Their daughter Maisie is taken by a hooded figure.

Sidra discovers Orenna flowers, which let a person see spirits and move with supernatural speed. Tension with the West grows after a Breccan raid burns a croft and wounds Torin with an enchanted blade.

Eliza Elliott, one of the missing girls, returns clean but unable to speak. Jack composes a ballad for the Northern Wind. The spirit king Bane tells him the Breccans took the girls and that Jack’s mother Mirin knows why.

Jack confronts Mirin. He learns his father is the Keeper of the Aithwood, a Breccan. He also learns Adaira is a Breccan twin who was swapped at birth and given to the Tamerlaines.

Moray Breccan, Adaira’s biological twin, tries to take Jack’s sister Frae. Jack stops him, and Moray is imprisoned. Adaira then gives up her title to Torin and agrees to go west with her biological mother, Innes Breccan.

The missing girls are returned.

Jack and Adaira have already handfasted, but Jack must stay behind to care for his mother and sister. The book ends with Adaira riding into the West, where music is forbidden.
