Cruelty Free Book Summary (Spoilers Ahead)

Spoiler warning: the following section recounts the plot in full, including the ending.

In March 2014, twenty-nine-year-old Lila Devlin and her Marvel-actor husband Aidan Reynolds wake to find their fourteen-month-old daughter, Josephine, gone from her nursery. The case becomes a national spectacle.

Tabloid editor Nico DeLuca, paparazzi photographer Tommy Olsen, and LAPD detectives John Carmichael and Nick Fox all feed the coverage. A botched stakeout lets the kidnapper escape with the ransom money.

Weeks later, a burned toddler’s body is found near Lake Gregory and identified as Josie. The public turns on Lila, casting her as neglectful or worse.

Lila and Aidan divorce. She leaves the country and spends a decade in India and Europe studying chemistry and meditation.

When she returns, Lila reconnects with her former publicist Cara Donaldson, who declines to work with her and refers her to Sylvie Lightly. Sylvie is a blacklisted PR manager who served jail time after driving her car into a nightclub crowd.

Sylvie becomes Lila’s co-founder and closest ally. She also proves willing to do anything Lila asks.

Lila arranges a meeting with Nico DeLuca to make peace. When he invites her onto his podcast for an episode about “moms who don’t have children,” she cuts his throat with a box cutter.

Sylvie walks in, locks the door, and helps dismember the body. The two women conceal the remains and move forward with the business.

Lila then drives to Lake Arrowhead to find retired detective John Carmichael. Overcome with guilt about the ruined investigation, he hands her a note revealing the location of prime suspect Arthur Allen. She shoots him and stores his body in Sylvie’s garage.

In Slab City, Lila corners Arthur Allen in a yellow RV and slits his throat. He denies kidnapping Josie until his final breath, and his death brings her no relief.

Searching for a product differentiator, Sylvie suggests harvesting human collagen. The two women boil Allen’s bones into powder and build glob’s signature serum around it.

The formula goes viral on TikTok and national morning television. glob becomes a multimillion-dollar brand, and Lila becomes a celebrated founder.

They hire Maya, a USC chemistry student, as an assistant. Lila begins to think of Maya as a stand-in for the daughter she lost.

To sustain supply and settle old scores, Lila expands her list. She drowns podcast host Greer Houser in a Williamsburg bathtub, kills Cara Donaldson in her kitchen, and executes Tommy Olsen in a Van Nuys motel.

Meanwhile, Lila reconnects with Aidan, now remarried to a model named Sonnet and raising a seven-year-old daughter, Talia. During a private conversation, details of his story stop matching.

Lila works out the truth: Aidan came home drunk that night, dropped the baby, and staged a kidnapping to protect his career. He let her absorb a decade of public hatred.

Instead of killing him, Lila and Sylvie abduct Talia from her bedroom and bring her to Lila’s Encino house.

Maya arrives that night to stay over and finds Talia asleep on the sofa. Sylvie forces her into the basement at gunpoint, where Maya sees labeled jars of collagen powder, including one with her missing boyfriend Peter’s name.

Peter had been killed by Lila to keep Maya from moving to New York. In the wine cellar, Sylvie reveals her own secret: she was the original 2014 kidnapper, taking Josie to cover her husband’s medical bills and leaving the infant at a fire station when police closed in.

She hid Josie’s survival for ten years so Lila would stay with her. Lila shoots Sylvie in the stomach. Sylvie falls against the gas stove and the kitchen ignites.

The two women fight while the house burns. Sylvie stabs Lila in the heart; Lila slits Sylvie’s throat. Both die on the floor.

Before she dies, Lila opens the basement door. Maya breaks a high window with a golf club, boosts Talia out with a car alarm fob, and climbs through the burning living room.

Lila silently begs Maya for forgiveness. Maya turns away and escapes into the night.

In her final hallucination, Lila sees Josie as a teenager in a grocery store. Lila reaches for her, but her hands pass through the girl’s clothes. Josie cannot see or hear her, and as Lila dies she whispers, “I hope I haunt you.”

Prologue: Ten years earlier, a crime involving famous young actress Lila Devlin shocked the country. The section traces her rise from working-class origins to stardom and her public collapse, ending with the idea that every dream ends in waking up.

Part One: The Fall: Introduces excerpts from an upcoming book titled The Devlin Baby: An Oral History. It notes that a decade after the March 2014 kidnapping, many questions remain unanswered, and that Lila and Aidan declined to participate.

Chapter One: Lila flies to Los Angeles after ten years abroad, managing her fear of flying with a mantra. She lists three men she intends to forgive, and meets a young drama graduate named Peter, who recognizes her from the film Too Many Mornings.

The Devlin Baby: An Oral History (Section 1): Covers Lila’s childhood in Chelsea, Massachusetts, and her mother Denise’s death from breast cancer. It describes her discovery at an open casting call by director Susan Friedland and her father Mark’s death during Oscar campaigning.

Chapter Two: Lila settles into a Studio City apartment and pitches her skincare concept to former publicist Cara Donaldson over lunch. Cara declines and refers her to Sylvie Lightly instead.

The Devlin Baby: An Oral History (Section 2): Traces Lila’s relationship with Aidan Reynolds, their City Hall marriage, and her difficult pregnancy with hyperemesis gravidarum. It covers Josie’s birth in October 2011 and Lila’s postpartum depression.

Chapter Three: Lila visits Sylvie’s run-down West Hollywood office. Sylvie defends her criminal past, endorses the glob concept, and urges Lila to dye her hair back to copper red.

The Devlin Baby: An Oral History (Section 3): Reconstructs March 5, 2014, when Lila attended a bachelorette party while nanny Lydia Novak watched Josie. It details Aidan sending the nanny home, Lila discovering the empty nursery at 5:00 a.m., and a five-million-dollar ransom note.

Chapter Four: Lila has dinner at Aidan’s Hollywood Hills home and meets his wife Sonnet and their six-year-old daughter Talia. She refuses his offer to invest and returns home carrying old rage.

The Devlin Baby: An Oral History (Section 4): A second ransom note demands ten million dollars in cash, which Lila and Aidan hide from police. Lydia secretly informs Detective Fox, police intercept the drop, and a shot is fired at the fleeing van.

Chapter Five: Lila recalls her teenage years caring for her alcoholic father. She returns to Sylvie’s office with copper hair, agrees to a 60-40 partnership, and watches Sylvie handle a client crisis.

The Devlin Baby: An Oral History (Section 5): Detectives question gardener Arthur Allen, a convicted sex offender with no physical evidence tying him to Josie. Lila agrees to a televised Diane Sawyer interview, after which a third note claims Josie is dead.

Chapter Six: Lila visits Detective Nick Fox, who remains condescending and hints he still sees her as a suspect. She abandons the idea of forgiveness and sets her sights on Nico DeLuca.

The Devlin Baby: An Oral History (Section 6): A toddler’s burned body is found in Lake Gregory and identified as Josie. Josie’s ashes are scattered off Cape Cod, the couple divorces six months later, and Lila disappears from public life.

Chapter Seven: Nico DeLuca arrives for a meeting and defends his past coverage, proposing an episode about “moms who don’t have children.” Lila slits his throat with a box cutter, and Sylvie offers to help dispose of the body.

Part Two: The Rise: Opens the second section, following glob’s growth alongside Lila’s secret violence. It covers the aftermath of Nico’s disappearance, the search for investors, and Maya’s arrival as an intern.

Chapter Eight: Police question Lila about her meeting with Nico, and she performs a holistic persona until they leave. A pitch at Atlas Capital collapses when an investor accidentally AirDrops an old lingerie photo, pushing Sylvie toward guerrilla marketing.

Chapter Nine: Lila and Sylvie hire Maya, a USC chemistry student from Cape Cod, as an unpaid intern. Lila feels an immediate bond with her, and glob receives its first boost from a Reddit skincare forum.

Chapter Ten: Lila tells Sylvie she plans to kill John Carmichael, and Sylvie agrees to store the body. The next morning Lila comforts Maya on the fire escape and offers her a paid position after graduation.

Chapter Eleven: Lila drives to Lake Arrowhead and breaks into Carmichael’s cabin, where he is waiting with a shotgun. He admits the LAPD botched the scene and gives her Arthur Allen’s location before she shoots him and dismembers the body with Sylvie.

Chapter Twelve: Maya reports a rejection from The Cut and pivots to TikTok influencers. Lila offers her the assistant job, and Peter arrives at the office, asks Maya out, and is accepted.

Chapter Thirteen: Lila and Sylvie drive into the Sonoran Desert in disguise and locate Arthur Allen’s trailer near Slab City. He denies kidnapping Josie, and Lila beats him and slits his throat without finding closure.

Chapter Fourteen: Lila realizes her rage is aimed at everyone who consumed her tragedy. Sylvie suggests harvesting Allen’s collagen for a product “wow factor,” and the two boil his bones into powder before sleeping together.

Part Three: Arrival: Opens the final section as glob explodes commercially and Lila’s body count grows. It moves through talk show appearances, brand expansion, and the final confrontation.

Chapter Fifteen: The human-collagen formula goes viral, and Lila performs a live demo on Wake Up, America, framing the brand as a tribute to her daughter. Afterward she persuades Sylvie to help kill podcaster Greer Houser in Brooklyn.

Chapter Sixteen: Lila confronts Greer for profiting off her family’s pain and drowns her in the guest bathtub with Sylvie’s help. They pack the body into an antique chest and fly private back to Los Angeles.

Chapter Seventeen: Five months into the job, Maya mixes serum with Lila in the office lab and reflects on her admiration for her boss. Sylvie behaves possessively, and Maya quietly notes her role as Lila’s enforcer.

Chapter Eighteen: Lila rents an Encino farmhouse and converts the wine cellar into a collagen lab, using concentrated serum on her own face. Peter reveals he and Maya have been dating for five months, and Aidan invites Lila to his 40th birthday party.

Chapter Twenty-Five: Lydia fires a shotgun and wounds Lila, who escapes and is treated privately at home. Weeks later Detective Nick Fox questions Lila about a string of missing persons, and she resolves that Peter must die.

Chapter Twenty-Six: Lila and Sylvie run Peter down while he skateboards near Silver Lake Reservoir. He begs for Maya’s safety before Lila kills him, and his body is processed into collagen powder while Maya grieves at the office.

Chapter Twenty-Seven: Lila lures Aidan to Encino by claiming Arthur Allen has resurfaced. He admits he came home drunk, dropped the baby, and staged the kidnapping to protect his career, and Lila decides to take Talia instead of killing him.

Chapter Twenty-Eight: Lila and Sylvie break into Aidan’s home after midnight, chloroform the sleeping Talia, and carry her to the van. Back in Encino, Lila holds the child on the sofa while Sylvie prepares the basement table.

Chapter Twenty-Nine: Maya arrives to stay overnight and finds Talia on the sofa. Sylvie forces her into the basement at gunpoint, where Maya sees the labeled collagen jars and learns Sylvie was the original kidnapper who left Josie at a fire station.

Chapter Thirty: Sylvie admits she concealed Josie’s survival for ten years, and Lila shoots her in the stomach. The stove ignites, the two women fight fatally, and Lila opens the basement door before dying.

Chapter Thirty-One: Maya shatters a high basement window with a golf club and boosts Talia outside with the car fob. She crawls through the burning living room, sees Lila dying, and turns away from her silent plea for forgiveness.
