In 1985, the Day family farm in Kinnakee, Kansas is collapsing. Patty Day fights foreclosure while her ex-husband Runner avoids responsibility.
Ben Day becomes a town pariah after Krissi Cates falsely accuses him of molestation. He secretly dates Diondra Wertzner, a wealthy girl pregnant with his child.
On the night of January 2, 1985, Ben and Diondra sneak into the farmhouse to steal money. They plan to run away together. Michelle Day catches them and threatens to expose Diondra’s pregnancy.
