The novel opens during closing speeches at Newcastle Crown Court. Jack Millman stands accused of murdering Judge Anton Smythe on September 6, 2024. In his internal thoughts, Jack admits he killed the judge but hints the circumstances are more complex than the prosecution claims.
Five years earlier, Leila Reynolds defended Jack in an assault case involving crime boss Tony Flanagan.
Following advice from her husband and pupilmaster Julian Kesler, Leila served a defense statement naming Jack’s witness, hostess Mia Woods.
Flanagan intimidated the witness into disappearing, and Jack was convicted and sentenced to four years. Before parting, Leila told him: “Don’t trust anyone. Especially lawyers.”
When Judge Smythe is found dead in Jack’s attic flat above Temptation, Jack calls 999 but gives a no-comment interview. He specifically requests Leila to represent him.
She agrees despite their history, but Jack refuses to provide a defense statement or reveal his version of events before trial.

At trial, Jack takes the witness stand and delivers bombshell testimony, revealing the existence of “Witness X” (his lover) and exposing Quinn Smythe’s role in Lewis Sorrington’s death. Leila cross-examines Quinn, forcing him to admit he lives in Pickford—explaining the cell-site location of Jack’s phone.
In her closing speech, Leila appeals to the jury’s understanding of human flaws and reasonable doubt. After three hours of deliberation, the jury returns a unanimous NOT GUILTY verdict for Jack.
