The book begins in August 1986 in Omaha, Nebraska. Sixteen-year-old Eleanor Douglas returns to a cramped, tense household. Her stepfather, Richie, is an abusive presence.

On her first school bus ride, no one offers Eleanor a seat. Park Sheridan, a quiet sophomore, reluctantly scoots over.

They sit in silence for weeks.

Park notices Eleanor reading his comic books over his shoulder. He starts holding the pages open longer. He then makes her mix tapes of bands like The Smiths. This shared activity builds a private world between them on the noisy bus.

The physical connection grows when Park takes Eleanor’s hand on the bus. This moment marks a turning point. It gives Eleanor a feeling of safety she does not have at home.

At school, however, bullying escalates. Obscene messages appear on her textbooks. Park fights Steve, a main bully, to defend her.

Eleanor’s home life is dangerous. Richie’s cruelty keeps the family in constant fear. Her mother tries to appease him. The small house offers no privacy.

This terror contrasts with Park’s stable home. His parents, Mindy and Harold, become more welcoming to Eleanor.

A turning point occurs when Eleanor finds her bedroom destroyed. Her music tapes are unspooled. Her books are ruined.

A vulgar message in Richie’s handwriting reveals he was the school bully all along.

Fearing for her life, Eleanor runs away.

With Park’s help, they flee to her uncle’s house in St. Paul, Minnesota. Park’s father supports the escape. They share an emotional drive and a painful goodbye.

In Minnesota, Eleanor is safe. But she cannot bear to read Park’s letters. She wants to keep their love as a perfect memory.

Back in Omaha, Park is heartbroken.

He works at a record store and goes to prom with a coworker.

Almost a year later, Park receives a postcard from Eleanor. On the back are just three words. The book ends with this small gesture of hope.
