The 2003 Murder
Amanda Fisk, a corporate attorney at Bee Accounting in St. Paul, follows her boyfriend Dr. Timothy Carlson to the office. She finds him with Doris Grandfelt, a young clerk at the firm.
Amanda takes a stainless steel table knife from the executive cafeteria, sharpens its point on a brick windowsill, and waits.
Outside a third-floor restroom, she stabs Doris in the back, piercing her heart, then stabs her more than twenty times in the face, eyes, and chest. She packs the body into garbage bags, drives to Shawnee Park in Woodbury, and buries it in a line of trees.
To cover her tracks, she wears Timothy’s size 10.5 Nike sneakers over the soft ground.
She parks Doris’s Subaru near a Minneapolis singles bar to build a false trail. Dog walkers find the body the next evening.
Investigators recover male DNA from a recent sexual encounter. Because Timothy left traces, detectives assume Doris was raped by a stranger. After hundreds of interviews and no match, the case goes cold.
Twenty-One Years Later
Lara Grandfelt, Doris’s twin and a wealth-management executive, is in chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Retired postal worker Charles “Bud” Light digs up a sharpened table knife near the parking lot. In Lethal Prey, the blade matches Oneida silverware from Bee Accounting’s executive dining room.
On local TV, Bud speculates that the back wound points to a woman who ambushed Doris from behind.
Days later, Bud is found dead in his motel room.
Police first suspect murder, but testing shows he died of peanut-induced anaphylactic shock, cracking his head on a bed frame.

The Break in the Case
An anonymous caller dubbed “Big Dave” tells Virgil that Doris worked as a high-end escort. He names her procurer, Roger Jepson, a former Hennepin Avenue bartender. Jepson lists former clients, including radio psychologist Dr. Lawrence Klink.
Klink offers a crucial detail: semen found in Doris’s cervix had not reached her fallopian tubes. That proves she was killed within minutes of the encounter. He also recalls her boasting about a wealthy doctor who drove a Porsche.
Old film photos from Doris’s former roommate are restored, showing her beside an older Porsche 911. Davenport and Flowers recruit six major true-crime sites to identify Bee Accounting clients who were doctors driving Porsches in 2003.
The Killer Fights Back
Amanda recognizes her husband’s 1998 Porsche in the photos. She lures Timothy to their bedroom balcony and shoves him over the railing, staging an accidental fall.
Then she burns his clothes and scrubs the house drains with chemical gel to erase his DNA.
Staking out Lara’s home, Amanda mistakes her assistant Marcia Wise, driving Lara’s black Jaguar, for Lara herself. She follows Marcia to a Whole Foods parking lot and beats her to death with an 18-inch wrench.
A tip from Farmington identifies Timothy Carlson as the Porsche-driving surgeon. His sudden “accident” flips suspicion onto his widow.
Questioned at her Summit Avenue home, Amanda claims she donated all of Timothy’s belongings.
That night, John Sandford sends his killer to Virgil’s farm in Mankato. She douses the horse stable in gasoline and sets it ablaze. Virgil’s partner Frankie Nobles and her son Sam rescue the horses, suffering second-degree burns.
The Trap Closes
At the Turtle Lake Golf Club, investigators recover Timothy’s size 10.5 golf shoes from his old locker. Lab testing confirms a 100 percent DNA match with the 2003 crime scene evidence.
At Amanda’s home, technicians find sterilized jewelry and barbershop hair planted in the sink trap to fake a negative DNA result.
Amanda’s past surfaces next. In ninth grade, a friend fell under a moving truck in front of her. A law school rival was beaten to death with a lead pipe just as she outranked Amanda.
Her mother died of an Ambien and insulin overdose that left Amanda more than $800,000 richer.
In Harris, Minnesota, investigators unearth the decapitated, castrated skeleton of Amanda’s abusive uncle, Don Schmidt. Gas station footage also places her near the Mankato arson. With Ramsey County Attorney Russ Belen conflicted out, Dakota County prosecutors take the case to a grand jury.
Amanda Fisk is indicted for first-degree murder and arrested at her Summit Avenue home.
She hires veteran defense attorney Earl Gray, who builds a defense around statistical “death clusters.”
Lara prepares a civil wrongful-death suit to strip Amanda of her fortune, Virgil marries Frankie at their rebuilt stable, and Amanda tells her terriers the odds of a hung jury are “sixty-forty.”
