TL;DR: The Core of a Unicorn Hunt
In 1490, Brittany is a rain-soaked duchy losing a war against France.
Its young sovereign, Duchess Anne, faces a forced marriage to King Charles that would erase her nation’s independence.
To buy time, she announces a unicorn hunt, claiming only a virtuous virgin can lure the beast.
Her real plan is a secret proxy marriage to Maximilien of Austria, the one prince strong enough to defy France.
But the unicorn is real, and so are the faerie forces living beyond the thin border of the Lost Lands.
The hunt drags Anne into a deeper conflict involving a mad sorcerer, a kidnapping, and a lost city called Keris.
By the end, Anne has embraced her own magical gifts, freed a trapped realm, and secured her sovereignty on her own terms.

In 1490, the duchy of Brittany is exhausted by war with France. Duchess Anne, a small woman with a limp from a deformed hip, rules with a sharp political mind.
Her treasury is empty, her council is divided, and General Guillaume de La Trémoille arrives demanding she marry King Charles of France.
Anne creates a plan. She claims that, as a virgin, she is the only suitable bait for a unicorn rumored to live in the enchanted forest of Brocéliande.
The hunt is a ruse to stall the French while her messenger, Wolfgang von Polhaim, returns from Flanders with a marriage contract from Maximilien of Austria.

Traveling to the forest, Anne rescues a starving orphan named Elesbed from a ruined farm.
At the convent of Paimpont, she secretly weds Maximilien by proxy through Polhaim. During the actual hunt, a real unicorn appears. Anne refuses to let it be killed. Instead, she cuts a lock of its glowing mane to prove the encounter.
Afterward, the hunting party discovers a dazed stranger named Julien Moreau. He claims he has been in the Lost Lands for two hundred years. Moreau warns Anne that the king of the korriganed, the faerie-folk, desires her hand in marriage and will send three signs: water, fire, and memory.
The signs arrive as the court returns to Nantes. A pageant cart begins gushing endless salt water. Phantom fires appear in castle windows.
Marguerite of France, the king’s brilliant and ruthless sister, arrives to finalize the French marriage. She secretly allies with Moreau, who has regained his sorcerous mirror.
Moreau can manipulate senses through enchantment and pull physical objects from the Lost Lands through sorcery. Anne’s elderly guardian, Jean de Rieux, betrays her to the French. He does this out of fear for her safety against the supernatural threats.
Anne flees Nantes for the fortified city of Rennes. With her are her younger sister Isabeau, her half-brother Henri, and Louis, the Duke of Orléans.
Louis, a former prisoner of France, chose to save Anne after witnessing her tame a sea-drake that Moreau unleashed in the palace gardens.
During that confrontation, Anne was splashed with the sea-drake’s silver blood. The blood opened her inward sight, letting her see the layers of the world and travel by shadows.
While besieged in Rennes, Anne realizes Maximilien has not come to help because Moreau is haunting him with the ghost of his dead wife, Mary of Burgundy.
Anne projects herself into Maximilien’s palace in Ghent using her shadow-traveling gift. She breaks the enchantment and urges him to fulfill his duty.
But the threat escalates.
A tournament outside Rennes becomes a cover for a French surprise invasion.
Moreau kidnaps Isabeau to the Castle of Never-Was in the Lost Lands.
He intends to use her as a hostage to force Anne’s hand.
Anne and Louis pursue him into a realm of dreams and ghosts. There, they discover Moreau has murdered four previous brides in his quest to find the lost city of Keris.
With help from the ghosts of those women and Elesbed’s faerie-cat Butter, Anne defeats Moreau. She then refuses a life of pure political sacrifice.
Anne rides the unicorn to find the legendary city of Keris. She uses her sorcery to drag the entire city back into the mortal world at the bay of Douarnenez.
Anne is crowned Queen of Keris and Armorica. She returns to Rennes and traps the French leadership inside the Guardhouse with an enchantment until they agree to a peace treaty.
She secures Brittany’s independence and negotiates an annulment with Maximilien.
In the end, Anne chooses to rule alongside Louis of Orléans, fulfilling her vow to her father while carving out a destiny of her own choosing.
