Web of Vows and Vengeance Summary: Spoilers Ahead

Fourteen years before the novel begins, Rose Kultavaris lived in the High Hold with her family. Her mother, Reeva, served as midwife during the Queen’s fatal childbirth.
Eleven-year-old Prince Kyor lied to his father, claiming Reeva intentionally let the Queen die to save a frail infant.
King Korvane stripped the Kultavaris family of their nature magic and titles, and murdered Rose’s newborn brother, Florian. Rose’s father drank himself to death, and her mother died of illness in the slums.
Rose now brews medicinal tonics to keep herself and her younger sister, Acacia (Kay), alive.
Desperate, she sneaks into Etta’s grand temple during curfew and offers her tears at the altar, pledging her soul to compete in the Retterheld.
Inside, she meets a blue-eyed nobleman in furs who warns her that compassion in the Retterheld is suicide. The next morning, Rose is selected as one of fifty Rettlings, alongside Prince Kyor Knavin himself.
Before presenting herself at the High Hold, Rose visits Priestess Dinah Poltick, who gifts her a rare two-toned ceremonial dagger.
At the Sunken Temple, the candidates take blood vows before High Priestess Mila. The inauguration proves deadly: Jai Den bleeds to death, Coulter is imprisoned for screaming, and two others die instantly.
Rose survives unscathed when Etta accepts her blood. In the library, she discovers her dagger is one of the ancient Three Blades of Vindrun.
Trial 1 takes place on a stormy coast where nine colossal jötnar emerge. Rose scales a giant with Jonas, Llinos, and Benny, while Benny and Kyor each slay one.
Back at the barracks, Zara uses fire-wielder Mattieu to burn Rose’s room, putting Rose in the infirmary for five days. During a training exercise, Rose burns her own shirt to provide ash for Yeva Mancy’s ash-weaving magic, turning the tide against Zara.
In Trial 2, the Rettlings enter Afaven Forest, stripped of magic, tasked with rescuing bound loved ones while avoiding unbonded dire wolves.
Rose finds Kay bound by whips of light and frees her. Kyor, poisoned by a lingering potion Rose brewed for Zara, is saved when Rose helps him recover.
After the trial, a royal ball is violently ambushed by rebels aligned with Issen ice-weavers.
Commander Zelle is slain while protecting the court.
Kyor retreats to the battle yard wall, where he etches tallies in stone with his own blood. Rose finds him, and Kyor confesses his childhood lie was a grief-stricken reaction to his mother’s death.
Rose forgives him and abandons her desire to kill him.

Trial 3 is held on the frozen expanse of Follen Lake, where candidates must traverse thick fog inhabited by maddening spectral ghosts.
Mattieu stabs himself to death, and Oke attacks Rose.
In desperation, Rose calls out to a spectral Issen warrior and unintentionally awakens latent, forbidden Issen ice magic, summoning a sword of pure ice that slays Oke.
Kyor witnesses the event, covers up her illegal magic, and urges her to keep it hidden.
Back at the palace, Commander Holden attempts to poison Rose at a white-themed ball. Llinos accidentally drinks the poisoned wine and dies in Rose’s arms.
Overcome with rage, Rose pursues Holden outside and plunges his own blade through his chest. Kay witnesses the bloody execution and recoils in horror from her sister.
In Trial 4, the eight remaining Rettlings are taken to high cliffs near the Eastern Isles.
They must row across choppy waters while a monstrous kraken attacks.
Rose realizes High Priestess Mila and her priestesses are using dark magic to manipulate the kraken. Rose uses her latent mind and ice power to connect with the kraken, while Kyor hurls lightning at the cliff to break the priestesses’ spell.
High Priestess Mila disqualifies Kyor for attacking the priestesses. Before he is ported away, Kyor commands Rose to win the Ofur.
The remaining candidates enter a mountain cavern for the final trial—the Ofur. Zara uses her deleterious powers to break Benny’s leg and crush Jonas.
Rose summons a massive wall of solid ice to block Zara and save Benny, then pushes forward into the mountain’s inner sanctum.
Inside, Etta manifests through Priestess Dinah’s body. Although Zara reached the chamber first, Etta announces the trial is incomplete and demands both women cede their magic. Both agree. Jonas stumbles into the chamber, battered and bleeding.
Etta issues the final condition: whoever kills Jonas will be granted the gifting. Zara lunges to slaughter him, while Jonas begs Rose to kill him quickly so Zara does not win.
Rose firmly refuses to murder her friend, choosing compassion over ambition.
She steps between Zara and Jonas, engaging Zara in hand-to-hand combat. Rose slashes Zara’s arm with Dinah’s ceremonial dagger of Vindrun; the enchanted blade drains Zara’s life force, killing her.
Having chosen life and self-sacrifice, Rose is proclaimed the true winner of the Retterheld by Etta.
The Goddess restores Rose’s nature magic, augmented with her latent ice power, her title as Lady Kultavaris, her family’s High Hold estate, and their vast wealth.
Rose returns to the High Hold in triumph and reunites passionately with Kyor. However, her victory is immediately undermined by political traps.
Thea confronts Rose, revealing a sketch Kyor drew of her years ago and warning that Kyor will always choose his father’s crown over a woman.
Kay reveals she is pregnant by Hew Howells, who refused to marry her because King Korvane arranged his marriage to a Dorain duchess. To avoid social ruin, Kay announces she is marrying Lord Artur Lorathin—Jonas’s elderly father.
When Kyor and Rose confront Hew in the courtyard, King Korvane interrupts. Korvane subtly threatens Kyor, stating that if Kyor ever admits he lied about Reeva Kultavaris fourteen years ago, it will be treated as treason—resulting in Kyor’s execution and disinheritance.
Forced to choose between Rose’s public vindication and his own life and crown, Kyor remains silent, leaving Rose surrounded by a dangerous new web of vows, deception, and courtly vengeance.
