A Rip Through Time Summary: The Full Story
Warning: This section contains major spoilers for the entire plot.
The story begins with Mallory Atkinson, a thirty-year-old detective from Vancouver, in Edinburgh. She is there to see her dying grandmother, Nan. Needing air, she goes for a jog.
In an alley, she sees a strange projection of a girl in a blue dress before someone strangles her with a rope.
Mallory wakes up in a strange bed, wearing a corset. She quickly discovers she is in the body of the girl she saw. A stern housekeeper, Mrs. Wallace, and a doctor, Duncan Gray, tell her she is Catriona Mitchell. They believe she is a maid who was recently attacked.
The date is May 22, 1869. Mallory realizes the rip occurred exactly 150 years before her own attack. To avoid an asylum, she pretends to have amnesia and begins life as a housemaid. She performs grueling chores while desperate to find a way home.
Dr. Gray is an undertaker who secretly studies forensics. Detective Hugh McCreadie brings him the body of Archie Evans, a reporter. The body is staged with feathers and a wooden beak.
Gray asks Mallory, now “Catriona,” to take notes. She shocks him by showing she can read and write.
Gray’s sister, Isla, is a chemist. She is suspicious of Catriona’s sudden intelligence. She demands the return of a stolen locket. Mallory retrieves it from a pawnshop, proving she is not the original Catriona, who was a thief. On the way back, the killer attacks her again.
Mallory fights back and stabs him, but police arrest her.
Gray bails her out. Isla plans to fire her, so Mallory reveals the truth: she is from the future. Isla accepts this. Mallory begins assisting Gray with the investigation. They track the killer’s connections to anti-immigrant radicals and opium.
Mallory’s main suspect becomes Constable Colin Findlay. She breaks into his apartment and finds his journal. The truth is stunning.
The 21st-century man who strangled Mallory has taken over Findlay’s body. He killed Evans to learn how to impersonate the constable.
The imposter kidnaps Isla. Mallory and Gray follow a trail of peppermints to an empty house. The killer is staging his victims to copy Jack the Ripper. He knocks Gray out. Mallory confronts him. During the fight, she stabs the killer in the back to save Gray’s life.
Before dying, Findlay’s real consciousness returns. Gray reveals he overheard everything and now believes Mallory’s story.
Mallory confesses to Detective McCreadie that she killed Findlay. In the end, Gray and Mallory agree to be partners. She has found a new purpose in 1869.
