I’ll Make a Spectacle of You Summary: The Full Story

Spoilers ahead.

The book opens with a childhood memory. Ten-year-old Zora is publicly shamed by her older sister Jasmine in the backwoods, and the humiliation ends their closeness for years.

Interwoven historical passages reveal how Bricksbury began.

In 1823, siblings Amias and Hosanna Crawfoot found the school as a refuge for Black students.

When white supremacist violence threatens the campus, Amias asks for supernatural protection. The bargain he strikes requires human blood.

In 1877, Amias stabs Hosanna inside their church. She merges with a demon and becomes the Beast in the Woods, an entity with hellfire eyes and papery skin that leaks ink and written text.

Amias receives immortality in exchange for supplying the Beast with five sacrifices every fifty years. The arrangement keeps outside racial terror away from Bricksbury.

In September 2027, Zora arrives for her master’s degree with her Rottweiler, Henry Louis. She discovers that Jasmine now teaches Old Testament studies on the same campus.

Her thesis proposal, “The Spiritual History of Affrilachia,” is rejected by her advisor, the historian Dr. Grant, as too broad. He gives her the 1927 diary of former librarian Esther Fisherman instead.

The diary describes the Beast in the woods and a string of vanished students. Zora visits the Jonesborough Conjure Shoppe, run by sixth-generation rootworker Mallory Holston, to buy protection herbs.

She attends Conjure Night in the Woodlands and meets jazz student Khadijah Marquez and music student Immanuel. During an herbal bathing game, Zora’s Hoodoo power flares without warning and draws their attention.

In the library’s subterranean Rare Books Room, Zora opens an impossible volume titled The Living Crypt. The book pulls her into a vision of Amias and the screeching Beast murdering Esther Fisherman in 1927.

Diary entries show that Esther chose to fight once she learned her apprentice, Hezekiah Lee, had been erased from school records and sacrificed.

Working with library assistant Lamont Waters, Zora learns about the Keepers of the Beast, a secret society founded in 1877. A visit to the Historical Society introduces her to Director Charlene, who is later revealed to be Mallory under an immortal identity granted by Amias in 1977.

Zora also learns that Jasmine, Khadijah, and Immanuel are active Keepers. During homecoming, students fall into trances and chant “To Hosanna!” and “To Amias!”

Immanuel and Khadijah briefly speak in distorted voices, warning Zora to stay out of the woods. Robed Keepers, including student Imani Brown, then abduct Zora from a party.

At the abandoned church, missing student Toni Anderson waits to be sacrificed. Jasmine knocks Zora unconscious to stop her from interfering, though a hidden body camera records Khadijah angrily confronting Jasmine to protect her.

Zora confronts Dr. Grant and realizes he is Amias Crawfoot. He explains that the current cycle needs five victims, and that Khadijah has been marked as the next one.

Zora binds Khadijah inside Hemlock Chapel with camping rope to keep her away from the woods. Amias and the Beast appear anyway. The Beast leaps onto the upper balcony and snaps Khadijah’s neck, killing her instantly.

Grieving, Zora breaks into Jasmine’s apartment and finds her sister on the floor with dark bruises and papery skin marks. Jasmine has traded herself to Amias as the fifth and final sacrifice of the cycle, buying Bricksbury fifty more years.

Zora performs an old rootwork ritual instead. She washes Jasmine’s feet with herbal tinctures, recites Psalm 1, and transfers the Beast’s mark from her sister onto her own skin.

She leaves a farewell letter, entrusts Henry Louis to Lamont, and runs through the night toward the abandoned church. Amias arrives expecting Jasmine and finds Zora instead.

Zora tells him she has taken her sister’s place. The Beast emerges from the dark with ember eyes and ink-stained hands as Amias screams in protest.

The Beast wraps its hands around Zora’s neck. She refuses to close her eyes and stares into the hellfire, giving her life to save her sister and continue the legacy of sacrifice.
