After Nyxaris bursts to life, Medra Pendragon is confined in Drakharrow Tower during Summerfell. Blake Drakharrow has claimed her as his consort through a forced blood-bond.
Viktor Drakharrow uses thrallweave mental attacks to extract the secret of the dragon’s awakening.
Sangratha’s highblood rulers have long controlled blightborn mortals through compliance magic. That magic is failing. Blake learns the Dragon Wars ended not with natural extinction but with a rebellion and a systematic slaughter of riders.
A Tribunal of four regents convenes to decide Medra’s fate. Viktor claims her as a Drakharrow asset. Lady Avari claims the dragon belongs to her house. Lord Mortis demands both Medra and Nyxaris be destroyed.
To save her life, Medra announces that she has full control over Nyxaris.
During a public evaluation, the dragon communicates telepathically with her and performs a display of power. Nyxaris refuses to submit fully and incinerates Lord Mortis after the regent tries to attack him.
Medra transfers to House Avari to live with Florence Shen. Professor Rodriguez reveals he is the last member of the Emberwatch. He explains that Viktor intends a soul-binding ritual that would destroy Medra’s soul so a highblood could control Nyxaris directly.
Rodriguez, Blake, and Kage Tanaka conspire to turn Nyxaris back to stone during the Winter Solstice.
Meanwhile, Blake’s body starts transforming. He learns his mother had rider blood, and feeding from Medra has triggered his latent dragon-shifting ability. He kills several of Viktor’s guards in a feral rage before returning to the academy.
On the solstice, Marcus Drakharrow and Catherine Mortis use stolen blood and a mind-controlled Lunaya Orphos to wake Molindra, a corrupted, necrotic dragon.
The battle in the Dragon Court begins. Florence is shot with a crossbow bolt meant for Medra. Medra’s mother Orcades, whose soul lives in a dagger, sacrifices herself by entering Molindra to lead the beast away.
Nyxaris initially refuses to help those who betrayed him.
A fluffin named Neville shows loyalty that moves the dragon. Nyxaris agrees to a blood-bond with Florence to save her life, potentially turning her into a new rider. The group survives but remains fractured, preparing for war against the remaining regents.
