Queen of Roses Summary: The Full Story

SPOILER WARNING: This section covers the complete plot, including the ending.

The novel opens with a traumatic memory. Five-year-old Morgan Pendragon hides under her mother’s bed while King Uther beats Ygraine to death. Uther declares the death an accident, but Morgan knows the truth.

Because Morgan carries fae blood from her mother, Uther disinherits her and legitimizes his illegitimate son Arthur.

He decrees that Morgan will be sent to the Temple of the Three Sisters at twenty-one.

Fifteen years later, Morgan lives as an outcast in Camelot’s Rose Court. She trains in swordplay with Sir Ector and her best friend Lancelet.

Her uncle, Caspar Starweaver, forces her to drink a medicine that suppresses her fae traits. Arthur rules cruelly, manipulated by Lord Agravaine. Agravaine’s son Florian torments Morgan and carves his name into her skin after drugging her.

Arthur summons Morgan and sends her to retrieve the Blade of Perun, also called Excalibur, from the ruins of Valtain. He believes her fae blood makes her suited for the task.

Morgan travels with Ragnar Whitehorn, a spy for Agravaine, and Captain Kairos Draven, newly promoted. Draven is secretly the legendary assassin known as Void’s Edge.

In the wild forests of Cerunnos, the party encounters an exmoor. Whitehorn tries to kill Draven and abduct Morgan, but Draven survives and kills Whitehorn.

They later meet Vesper, a charming minstrel and treasure hunter, in the town of Grimhold. Morgan feels drawn to Vesper’s warmth, which contrasts with Draven’s stoic intensity.

Morgan stops taking her medicine.

Her hair turns silver and magical runes appear on her skin. Lancelet arrives through a magical arch with news that Arthur has declared war on Lyonesse, executed nobles and priestesses, and forced their younger brother Kaye to the front lines.

Merlin, the High Priestess, warns Morgan not to return Excalibur to Arthur.

The group reaches the haunted ruins of Miridmiun. They face undead fae children reanimated by an ancient plague. Lancelet is dragged into the darkness.

Draven stays behind to save Odelna, a mysterious child found at a ruined caravan. Vesper pulls Morgan toward the hidden lake.

At the lake, Vesper reveals he is Arthur’s backup plan. He used magic-infused music to manipulate Morgan’s feelings. He stabs her and takes the sword.

As Morgan lies dying, she accesses her dormant magic and incinerates Vesper. The fae spirit Orcades reclaims Excalibur and vanishes.

Draven arrives with Odelna. Odelna is revealed as a host for an ancient Fate entity.

Desperate to save Morgan, Draven agrees to a blood ritual. The ritual reveals his true form as a Siabra, with horns and claws.

He bonds himself to Morgan and carries her unconscious body away, now eternally bound by blood and darkness.
