The Jade Setter of Janloon Summary: A Deep Dive

Spoiler Warning: This section reveals the full plot, including the ending.

Pulo Oritono is a twenty-two-year-old apprentice to Isin Nakokun, the most renowned jade setter in Janloon. They belong to the Haedo Shield, a minor clan of civil servants.

Pulo never excelled in jade combat disciplines, but he has grown to respect the craft of setting jade.

Their quiet routine ends when Gont Asch, the Horn of the Mountain clan, brings the moon blade of Pillar Ayt Madashi to the shop for repair. The blade is secured in the shop’s safe. Soon after, Isin’s nephew Nuo visits and shows a suspicious interest in the weapon.

That night, Pulo receives a distressed call from Malla, the shop’s Abukei assistant. He arrives to find the shop burglarized. The moon blade is gone, and Malla has been arrested by Detective Tan Takomon after she seemingly set off the alarm.

Pulo suspects Nuo, but Isin refuses to name his nephew to the police. Doing so would mean a certain death sentence from the Mountain clan. As the Mountain grows impatient, Pulo takes matters into his own hands.

He discovers that Nuo was using shine, a foreign drug that temporarily boosts jade tolerance. Desperate for help, Pulo turns to the rival No Peak clan. He teams up with Kaul Hiloshudon, called Hilo, who guides him through the city’s underworld.

They track stolen minor items to a dealer named Three-Fingered Gee, confirming Nuo was the seller. Pulo eventually finds Nuo in a derelict basement. His cousin is dying of the Itches, a fatal state of jade overexposure, and attacks him. Pulo kills Nuo in self-defense.

When Pulo returns to the shop, Isin has disappeared. He left a note bequeathing the shop to Pulo. Detective Tan later reveals the truth. The theft was orchestrated by Washo Kunimun, a wealthy Lantern Man of the No Peak clan.

Washo held a decade-long grudge against Isin. Years earlier, Isin rescued Malla from a human trafficking ring Washo operated, which targeted Abukei women. Washo used Nuo as a disposable tool to ruin Isin’s reputation and force a sale of the shop.

Isin, knowing the police could never touch Washo, takes matters into his own hands. He meets Washo under the guise of surrender. Isin executes Washo with Ayt Madashi’s moon blade before surrendering to authorities.

Because Isin killed a jadeless man, Haedo Shield elders sentence him to death to maintain neutrality. But Kaul Lanshinwan, the Pillar of No Peak, intervenes after hearing Pulo’s testimony about Washo’s crimes. Lan suggests exile to Ygutan instead of death.

Isin is sent into exile. Pulo and Malla, now partners, take over the shop. They successfully return the moon blade to Ayt Madashi and promise to uphold Isin’s legacy.
