Trained warriors called Green Bones serve clan fiefdoms that control jade mining and trade through the Kekon Jade Alliance.
In the capital city of Janloon, two rival clans dominate: No Peak, led by the Kaul family, and the Mountain, led by Ayt Mada.
The story opens with a thief named Bero trying to steal jade from a drunken No Peak member at the Twice Lucky restaurant. Kaul Hiloshudon—Hilo—the clan’s Horn and military leader, catches Bero.
Hilo is already worried about Mountain clan members pressuring No Peak businesses. His older brother Lan, the Pillar, prefers diplomatic de-escalation.
Their sister Shae returns to Janloon after two years abroad, having left her jade and clan life behind. Lan secretly asks her to audit the Kekon Jade Alliance’s financial records.

Bero, now working for the Mountain, ambushes Lan at the docks. Lan fights off the attackers but collapses and drowns in the harbor.
Lan’s death shatters the fragile peace. Hilo becomes the new Pillar. Shae puts her jade back on and becomes the clan’s Weather Man. Together they lead a violent retaliatory strike against Mountain strongholds.
The city falls into open clan warfare. The Mountain has more money and experienced warriors, so it begins bleeding No Peak through assassinations and territory losses.
Gont Asch, the Mountain’s Horn, gives an ultimatum: Hilo must surrender for execution, or his entire family will die.
Hilo knows No Peak cannot win a prolonged war. He meets Gont Asch at the Twice Lucky under the cover of a traditional death match. Hilo allows himself to be beaten near death as a ruse.
