Months after the rescue from hell, Alex Stern, Darlington, Pamela Dawes, Detective Turner, and Tripp Helmuth hunt the demons loose in New Haven.
Their first capture is a demon posing as an infant, slowly draining the life of a young mother named Janie Keep.
The team seals it inside the Voynich Coffin, an enchanted origami puzzle box already straining under twenty-two captive demons. The coffin is warping, and time is short.
At a Lethe board meeting at the Yale Club in New York, president Alban Reed announces a task force to hunt Linus Reiter, a century-old vampire preying across Connecticut.
Dawes secretly uses a bespelled compact to recover a photograph of the four pilgrims who first walked the Gauntlet to hell in 1933: Rudolph Kittscher, Lionel Reiter, Nick Zanca, and Hector Nygard.
Tracing Kittscher to a coastal house in Rhode Island, Alex and Darlington find him living under the alias Thomas Neumann.
He is not human but a nachtzehrer demon, consuming the life force of his twenty-six-year-old caregiver, Theo Alonto.

The hunt for the artifacts begins at Wolf’s Head.

Waiting in the dark temple room, Darlington’s demon form breaks to the surface. What follows between him and Alex is intense and passionate, until she uses hellfire to restore his human control.
Meanwhile, Linus Reiter kidnaps Alex’s roommate Mercy Zhao to force a confrontation at Savin Rock in West Haven. Reiter offers the Feet of Clay in exchange for the finished golem as a bodyguard, then demands a drink of Alex’s Wheelwalker blood.
Turner rams the vampire with his car, and Darlington drags Reiter into the ocean, where salt water severely injures him. The team rescues Mercy and takes the greaves.
A tarot compulsion spell aimed at Alex’s mother, Mira, triggers an ancient magical prohibition and draws her estranged father, Luis Huilca, to Il Bastone.
A member of an ancient Andean shamanic priesthood, Huilca believes children born of priests and witches are abominations — and he attacks Alex with a knife.
Dawes deflects the blade, and Darlington subdues Huilca with a compulsion coin. Healing in Hiram’s Crucible filled with goat’s milk, Alex experiences a shared psychic vision of the 1933 pilgrims planning their descent.
At Black Elm, Darlington’s family estate, Alex realizes the house itself is the demon bound to his great-grandfather, Daniel Arlington II.

Part III: Et in Perpetuum
The demons are adapting. A joy-hungry demon attacks a local day care and overwhelms Alex when she attempts to absorb it.
Turner and Darlington tie the drowning of a student, Kylie Sanz, to an illegal, unsanctioned prognostication ritual inside Skull and Bones.
Darlington then recovers the Head of the Dragon — a steel helm engraved with dragon scales — from Scroll and Key’s vault, aided by his ex-girlfriend Penelope.
At Grove Street Cemetery, the ghost of Hector Nygard (“Good Ol’ Hec”) shatters Darlington’s theory. The four artifacts were never golem parts; they are sacred armor for a single soldier who must ascend Harkness Tower and fight Golgarot at midnight.
Alex persuades Praetor Walsh-Whiteley to ban all society rituals. On Thursday night, she dons all four pieces of armor and begins the 284-step climb alone.
Golgarot assails her with psychological trials the entire way up.
Outside, Reiter leads a mob of brainwashed familiars against the tower, and Tripp Helmuth summons his albatross salt guardian, sacrificing his life to destroy the vampire. He dies in Dawes’s arms.
At the summit, Golgarot invokes his demonic fealty over Darlington, summoning him as his “second” and forcing him to attack Alex. She refuses to kill him or yield, instead channeling the resentment, pain, and determination of New Haven’s living and dead.
Transmuting Golgarot’s jeweled yoke into a fiery crown, Alex defeats the demon prince, hurls the Voynich Coffin into the underworld portal, and seals all seven nexuses across New Haven permanently.
The Ending
The final reckoning comes at Black Elm.
When Alban Reed threatens Alex’s family and demands she forge a new nexus through murder, she dismantles his soul completely, while a swarm of barn owls drives Professor Charlie Girard away.
With the nexuses closed, Alex, Darlington, Dawes, and Turner rebuild Lethe House as an independent operation based at Black Elm, recruiting Mercy Zhao as a new delegate.
Alex steps away from formal university classes, choosing to forge her own future beside Darlington while continuing to protect the city.
