You Did Nothing Wrong Summary: Dark Domestic Gothic

Introduction

Some houses do not need ghosts to feel haunted.

In *You Did Nothing Wrong*, author CG Drews trades supernatural specters for something far more disturbing: the secrets people bury inside their own walls.

The novel follows Elodie January, a young mother desperate to escape a disastrous past in Australia. She lands in a Virginia mansion with a new husband and a troubled son. But the grand house is rotting around them.

This is not a story about a haunting. It is a story about what happens when the people you love most are the ones hiding the worst truths.

The story alternates between a rotting Victorian house in Farrows, Virginia, and flashbacks to Elodie’s traumatic life in Australia.

Sixteen years earlier, eight-year-old Elodie was blamed for her toddler brother’s drowning. Her parents grew cold and hostile. Years later, she tricked a wealthy American named Bren into getting her pregnant to escape.

But Elodie’s escape required murder. She poisoned her parents with rat poison after they locked her five-year-old son in a garage. Bren helped her flee to America. In the present, Elodie is pregnant again. She tries to be the perfect wife. The house fights back.

Jude, now six, screams that the house wants to eat him. Elodie starts hearing scratching inside the walls. She rips off wallpaper to find bloody, rotting plaster. Bren dismisses her.

He blames old bricks and horsehair. The tension spikes when a teacher threatens to call Child Protective Services.

The truth surfaces in a secret basement. Elodie finds test kits showing toxic black mold and lead poisoning the air. She also finds hundreds of stalker photos of herself, taken over six years.

Bren did not meet her by accident. He was the boy from the party. He is Jude’s father.

In the basement, Bren reveals he knows she murdered her parents. He has legal paperwork to take Jude away. A violent fight erupts. A circular saw maims Bren. Jude hides in the wall.

After Bren pulls him out, the boy rejects Elodie. He runs to his father. Elodie smashes Bren’s skull with a hammer. She saws up his body and stuffs the pieces into the walls.

The next morning, she gives Jude to Bren’s sister, Ava. In the epilogue, Elodie lives under the alias “Rose.” She gives birth to another boy. She names him Jude. The cycle of obsession and control begins again.

Who Is This Book For?

Readers who enjoy psychological thrillers with unreliable narrators will find the plot familiar but tense. The gothic elements come from the decaying house and claustrophobic atmosphere, not the supernatural. The violence is graphic in the final act.

This suits readers interested in domestic noir about broken families. The story focuses heavily on maternal fear, neurodivergence, and institutional neglect.

Those who prefer fast-paced action may find the slow-burn buildup too slow. But readers who like watching a narrator unravel will stay engaged.
