The Way of Shadows Summary: A Descent Into the Night Angel’s World
SPOILER WARNING: This section recounts the full plot including the ending.
Azoth survives in the Warrens, the slum district of Cenaria. He lives with his friends Jarl and Doll Girl in the Black Dragon guild under the sadistic bully Rat. When he sees the wetboy Durzo Blint kill effortlessly, he decides to become a killer himself.
Durzo sets a grim condition for apprenticeship. Azoth must kill Rat. Believing Rat mutilated Doll Girl, Azoth traps Rat in a boat shop and leaves him to drown.
Later, the story reveals that Durzo himself caused Doll Girl’s injuries to push Azoth toward the kill.
Azoth adopts the identity of Kylar Stern and moves in with Count Rimbold Drake. He meets Logan Gyre, the honorable heir of a powerful noble house.
For a decade, Kylar trains in poisons, disguise, and combat but cannot summon the magical Talent that defines a true wetboy.
Meanwhile, the Godking of Khalidor, Garoth Ursuul, launches a covert invasion of Cenaria. The original Rat returns as Prince Roth Ursuul, a Khalidoran aetheling with immense magical power. Roth engineers a bloody coup inside the castle and murders the royal family.
Roth frames Kylar and Logan for the massacre. During the chaos, Kylar learns Durzo has secretly guarded the black ka’kari, a legendary artifact that grants immortality and magical Negation. Durzo’s secrecy and his ties to the enemy complicate Kylar’s loyalty.
In the north tower, Durzo reveals his true identity as the immortal hero Acaelus Thorne. He forces Kylar into a duel to the death. Kylar bonds with the black ka’kari, which had rejected Durzo centuries earlier after he allowed his lover Vonda to die.
Kylar kills Durzo and later strikes down Prince Roth in a vengeful final act. He then dies from his wounds. In a spiritual antechamber, a being called The Wolf offers him a choice between eternal peace or returning to life as the immortal Night Angel.
Kylar chooses to return for Elene (the former Doll Girl) and Uly, Durzo’s secret daughter.
He wakes healed but finds Cenaria has fallen to the Godking. The surviving nobles and allies flee into exile to plan a future resistance.
