A Light in the Flame Summary: A Primal’s Heart, A Destiny Forged in Fire

A god bows to a mortal woman.

That image opens A Light in the Flame, and it signals that nothing in the realms will remain as it was.

Jennifer L. Armentrout thrusts Seraphena Mierel into a role she never sought: the true Primal of Life, carrying the stolen embers that can either save or doom the world.

The man she loves—Nyktos, the Primal of Death—had his ability to love surgically removed long ago.

Now Sera must survive a transformation that will kill her unless she Ascends through the blood of a Primal who loves her.

And time is running out.

TL;DR: The Embers and the Cage

Sera is the Primal of Life, carrying the embers stolen by Kolis.

Nyktos cannot love—his kardia was removed—so her Ascension to full godhood is nearly impossible.

As the Rot consumes the Shadowlands and Kolis tightens his grip on the realms, Sera and Nyktos seek the God of Divination, who confirms that removing the embers will kill her.

They face the false King in his court, endure the betrayal of the Primal Attes, and watch friends die in a brutal attack.

The book ends with Sera imprisoned in a gilded cage in Dalos, where Kolis reveals she is the bearer of two crowns foretold in the Prophecy of Blood and Ash, and that she carries the soul of his lost love, Sotoria.

A Light in the Flame Summary: The Path to the Gilded Cage

SPOILERS AHEAD. All major events are detailed.

The story begins with Nyktos bowing to Sera, acknowledging her as the true Primal of Life. She carries the embers of life that belonged to his father, Eythos.

But Sera is in her Culling, a mortal transition that will kill her unless she Ascends through the blood of a Primal who loves her.

Nyktos had his kardia—the spark of the soul that enables love—removed years ago. Without it, he cannot love her, and her Ascension seems impossible.

An attack on the palace by freed entombed gods forces Sera to fight alongside Nyktos’s guards. The draken Davina dies in the battle. Sera proves herself, but the Culling accelerates.

Desperate, she attempts to flee the Shadowlands to kill Kolis herself. Nyktos catches her in the Dying Woods, where she accidentally blasts him with raw Primal eather. They realize they need answers.

They seek the God of Divination, Delfai, in the mortal realm of Irelone. Delfai delivers a devastating truth: the embers have merged with Sera.

Removing them to save the realms will result in her death.

Kolis denies Nyktos the right to a coronation and summons them to Dalos, the City of the Dead. In Kolis’s court, Sera is forced to execute a young draken named Thad as punishment for disrespect. She does so, but immediately uses her power to restore him to life.

This act alerts Kolis to her true potential. Back in the Shadowlands, Sera learns that Nyktos has been letting the Primal Veses feed on his blood for years to keep Sera’s identity a secret. Veses attacks out of jealousy, and a brutal battle ensues.

The Primal Attes, who seemed an ally, betrays them. He kidnaps Sera to stop the slaughter and delivers her to Kolis. Friends die, including Ector, one of Nyktos’s most trusted guards.

Sera wakes up in a gilded cage in Dalos, chained and dressed in gossamer. Kolis recites the full Prophecy of Blood and Ash. He identifies Sera as the bearer of two crowns, the one who will facilitate the rise of a Primal of Life and Death.

He feeds from her to take the embers. But Sera slurs that she is Sotoria—the woman Kolis once obsessed over, the soul reborn within her.

Kolis stops in horror.

The book ends with Sera seeing a silver wolf—Ash—waiting in the shadows outside her cage.
