All the Seas of the World Summary: A Breathtaking Saga of Exile & Destiny

Introduction

A covert landing on a hostile coast sets everything in motion in All the Seas of the World by Guy Gavriel Kay.

Two hired hands — a Kindath merchant-corsair and a woman who escaped slavery — deliver an assassin into the Majriti city of Abeneven, and the night does not go as planned.

Set in a world shaped by three faiths and a contested Middle Sea, the novel follows its characters across ports, palaces, and battle lines as a single botched job ripples into a holy war.

What begins as a contract becomes a story about exile, memory, and what people carry with them.

All the Seas of the World Summary: The Full Story

Spoiler warning: This section covers the full plot, including the ending.

The story opens at night off the Majriti coast. Rafel ben Natan, a Kindath merchant and licensed corsair, and Lenia Serrana, a Batiaran woman who killed her enslaver, land Ghazzali al-Siyab near Abeneven.

They have been hired by the corsair brothers Zariq and Ziyar ibn Tihon, rulers of Tarouz, to kill Abeneven’s ruler, Khalif Keram al-Faradi. Ghazzali enters the Palace of the Pearl posing as an itinerant storyteller and scholar.

Alone with the Khalif, he spots two astonishing objects: the original manuscript of ibn Udad’s Prologue to Knowledge and the green Diamond of the South around Keram’s neck. He changes the plan on impulse.

Ghazzali pours only half the poison into the Khalif’s wine, intending to leave him unconscious rather than dead. He steals both treasures and escapes, then meets Lenia at a hideout and boasts about what he did.

Judging him an unpredictable liability, Lenia stabs him to death and takes the diamond, the manuscript, and his purse. The partial dose still proves fatal — Keram dies without waking, and Ghazzali’s body is left behind.

Vizier Nisim ibn Zukar covers up the theft, executes witnesses, and seizes power as acting Khalif. Rafel and Lenia sail out of Abeneven aboard the Silver Wake with both treasures hidden below deck.

They stop at Marsena in Ferrieres to meet the ibn Tihon brothers. Lenia openly claims she killed Ghazzali because he was a security risk, and the brothers pay them. Rafel then persuades Lenia they must cross to Jaddite Batiara to sell the treasures.

They land at Sorenica, close to the farm where Lenia was abducted as a girl during an Asharite raid that killed her father. There she spots a corsair spying on the palazzo of Dona Raina Vidal, the revered “queen of the Kindath.”

Lenia corners the spy and learns that Ziyar ibn Tihon plans to abduct Raina’s sister-in-law, Tamir Vidal. The mercenary commander Folco Cino d’Acorsi shoots the spy dead with a crossbow.

Rafel offers the Diamond of the South to Raina Vidal, but she refuses it, knowing an Asharite treasure would endanger Kindath communities everywhere. Folco buys the diamond instead as a gift for his wife Caterina.

The next morning, Folco uses Tamir as bait in the market square. When Ziyar and his djannis strike, Folco’s men ambush them and Ziyar is killed.

Rafel, Lenia, and Folco travel to Rhodias with Ziyar’s corpse, presenting it to High Patriarch Scarsone Sardi. The High Patriarch displays the head on a spike and buys the Prologue to Knowledge after the captive scholar Kurafi ibn Rusad authenticates it.

The sale makes Rafel and Lenia immensely wealthy. In Rhodias, Antenami Sardi mentions a horse breeder in Bischio named Carlo Serrana, and Lenia realizes her younger brother survived the raid twenty years earlier.

Folco proposes a grand campaign: a holy fleet to invade Tarouz. In Seressa, Rafel and Lenia agree to fund a giant new carrack, the Silver Light.

A corrupt council member, Branco Ciotto, tries to burn Rafel’s ship. Skandir, a red-bearded Trakesian rebel leader, helps save it and executes Ciotto on the dock.

Lenia travels to Bischio and reunites with Carlo. His unconditional love dispels decades of shame over her enslavement.

In Firenta’s sanctuary, an assassination attempt on the Sardi family kills Versano Sardi. Rafel throws himself in front of a blade to save Antenami Sardi and is critically wounded.

Guided by telepathic instructions from a four-year-old girl in Bischio named Leora Sacchetti, physicians stanch the bleeding and save Rafel’s life. He recovers and joins Lenia at Carlo’s ranch, where they become lovers.

The combined Jaddite fleet sails for Tarouz. Rafel stays behind to run a textile enterprise in Firenta and Marsena, while Lenia sails aboard Silver Light with Captain Elie ben Hafai and Skandir.

Zariq ibn Tihon tries to flee Tarouz in disguise but is cornered in the ruins of Axartes. When he attempts to use poisoned blades against Skandir, Lenia stabs him in both shoulders to disable his arms, and Skandir executes him.

At sea, Elie ben Hafai uses the advanced cannon on Silver Light from behind a pine-treed bluff to demolish Tarouz’s fortress tower, igniting the Asharite fleet. Folco enforces discipline: the city is looted, but civilians are evacuated unharmed.

In the aftermath, Rafel reunites his parents in Marsena, provides for Gaelle and his brother’s children, and builds a successful business. Lenia rejects a life of endless war and returns to Batiara.

She reunites with Rafel at Carlo’s ranch, and the two step together into a shared future of love and freedom.

An unauthorized Esperañan attack on Abeneven ends in a crushed fleet and Carvajal’s execution.

Chapter XV
In the ruins of Axartes, Folco’s land party corners Zariq ibn Tihon. Zariq challenges Skandir to single combat with a hidden poisoned blade, so Lenia stabs him four times in both shoulders and Skandir executes him.

In Tarouz harbour, Elie ben Hafai uses Silver Light‘s elevated cannon from behind a bluff to demolish the fortress tower and ignite the Asharite fleet. Civilians are evacuated while the city is looted.

Chapter XVI
In the years after the sack of Tarouz, victory spoils enrich the Jaddite allies, and Elie ben Hafai becomes a celebrated naval hero before retiring to Carlo’s ranch.
