Brigands and Breadknives Summary: A Cozy Fantasy Masterpiece

Introduction

Fern Teverlin thought opening a new bookstore in Thune would fix everything.

Instead, the middle-aged rattkin finds herself drunk in an alley, then accidentally stowing away in a legendary warrior’s cart.

Brigands & Breadknives, the third book in Travis Baldree’s Legends & Lattes series, follows what happens when a quiet bookseller gets swept into someone else’s adventure.

The story centers on Fern’s internal unraveling.

It also introduces Astryx One-Ear, an elf whose name belongs in songs, and Zyll, a goblin with too many pockets and a suspiciously large bounty on her head.

TL;DR: A Bookseller’s Accidental Road Trip

Fern sells her old bookstore and moves to Thune, expecting a fresh start.

The grand opening succeeds, but she still feels hollow. After getting drunk, she hides in Astryx One-Ear’s cart and wakes up beside Zyll, a bound goblin bounty.

The three travel together through cliff cities, snowy villages, mountain monasteries, and monster-haunted forests. Fern slowly confronts her crisis of purpose.

Zyll’s bounty turns out to be a scheme she placed on herself. Fern refuses Astryx’s offer of squirehood, returns to Thune, and later writes a memoir about the journey.

Key takeaways:

  • Fern’s move to Thune does not solve her internal crisis.
  • Astryx is escorting Zyll, who placed a bounty on herself for protection.
  • The journey includes duels, a talking breadknife, and a fraudulent bard.
  • Fern learns to say “no” and rebuilds her friendship with Viv.

The novel opens in a swampy bog. Fern Teverlin’s carriage is attacked by scaled creatures called pescadines. Astryx One-Ear appears, kills the beasts, and disappears.

Fern reaches Thune, where her old friend Viv runs the coffee shop Legends & Lattes. Viv’s wife Tandri welcomes Fern, as do Cal the hob carpenter and Thimble the rattkin baker.

The new Thistleburr Booksellers opens successfully. Within a week, Fern feels a hollow anxiety. She gets drunk behind the shop and avoids talking to Viv.

Wandering at night, she spots Astryx’s cart. On impulse, Fern hides under the tarp and falls asleep. She wakes beside Zyll, a goblin bound in ropes.

Astryx discovers Fern but agrees to let her ride along to Bycross. Fern lies about being able to translate for Zyll. At a footbridge, a highwayman named Chak the Pathless challenges Astryx.

After a short duel, Astryx spares him. They all share a campfire meal. Zyll escapes her ropes easily, then puts them back on.

In Bycross, Fern sells a book to a stone-fey dealer for travel money. During a meal, Zyll disappears with the silverware. Fern finds her surrounded by mercenaries from a group called the Four Fingers.

Fern notices their boots are covered in red mud from the southern swamps. She deduces the mercenaries are actually Taltus’s bandits running a protection scam.

A skirmish breaks out. Astryx cuts through seven spearheads, and the Gatewardens arrest the frauds.

Fern sends a short note to Viv instead of her long apology letter. She chooses to keep traveling. Zyll reveals a second talking blade: Bradlee, a sentient breadknife.

Bradlee was once a greatsword before being reforged as punishment. He bickers constantly with Nigel, Astryx’s pompous Elder Blade.

A rockfall forces the group onto a backcountry path. Fern loses track of Zyll and finds her staring at a misty valley. For the first time in years, Fern feels present.

They push through a snowstorm to Turnbuckle. At an inn, Fern meets Quillin, a rattkin adventurer. She feels a mutual attraction, then learns Quillin is hunting Zyll for the bounty. Fern warns Astryx, and they flee.

On a mountain bridge, an orc bounty hunter named Tullah attacks. She blames Zyll for ruining her past campaign. The cart slides off the bridge.

Fern cuts the leather traces with Bradlee, saving Bucket the horse. Zyll hammers Bradlee into a stone crevice, creating a vibration that collapses part of the bridge. Tullah is trapped on the far side.

Astryx is badly wounded. Fern and Zyll get her to a Tarimite monastery. The monks, led by Brother Rhubarb and Abbess Bluebriar, shelter them.

Fern reads aloud to Astryx while she heals. A dwarf bard named Staysha arrives, eager to use Astryx’s legend for her songs.

The group resumes traveling toward Amberlin. In a forest village, they fight greenlings—root-animated skeletons—and a massive verdigaunt. Astryx’s shoulder fails her.

Zyll climbs the monster’s back and throws Nigel to Astryx, who kills it. Haber, leader of the real mercenary crew Haber’s Five, reveals Staysha stole their contract money.

Staysha later knocks Fern unconscious and kidnaps Zyll. Fern rides after her, traps the wagon in mud, and duels Staysha with Bradlee. She renames the breadknife Bardsbane.

Astryx arrives, and they leave Staysha stranded.

At Amberlin, Astryx apologizes to Fern and offers her a place as squire. At the bounty office, the truth comes out: Zyll placed the bounty on herself to hire Astryx as protection from Tullah.

With Tullah dead, Zyll collects her reward—a small pony named Round Boy and a tiny cart—and gives Bradlee to Fern.

Fern says no to Astryx. She returns to Thune and gives Viv her bundle of unsent letters. Their friendship survives. In the epilogue, Fern has written a memoir about the journey.

She is living in Azimuth and traveling with Quillin, wearing Astryx’s tracking bracelet on a necklace.
