A Dance of Lies Summary (Spoilers Ahead)
Spoiler warning: This section recounts the plot in full, including the ending.
Part One: King of Lies
Guards drag Vasalie Moran from a subterranean cell and bring her before King Illian of West Miridran. He gives her five weeks to rebuild her strength, audition for the entertainment roster at the Crowns’ Gathering, and serve as his informant.
Success means a full pardon. Failure means a return to her cell.
Her body no longer obeys her. Nerve damage, muscular atrophy, and dizziness limit what she can do, so she develops a workaround: throwing fine millen flour during spins to create clouds that mask her reduced range.
The technique wins Illian over at a dawn audition, and he sends her to the Isle of Anell with orders to befriend Laurent Achea, the palace’s Head of Staff.
On Anell, Master of Revels Copelan rejects her because every soloist slot is filled. Vasalie performs with her millen dust anyway, and he changes his mind, making her an alternate soloist and his partner.
During the opening performance of a Brisendali folktale, a note from Illian orders her to target King Anton. Vasalie pulls Anton onto the stage mid-dance, and King Rurik of Brisendale later interrogates her for involving a Miridranian king in a Brisendali story.
Anton covers for her and invites her to a private banquet. There she recognizes General Maksim Stova, head of the Brisendali military, as her biological father, the man she fled at thirteen after watching him murder her stepmother Emilia.
Illian then hands her a vial of bellamira poison and orders her to kill Lord Bayard, Anton’s advisor and co-inventor. She cannot do it, so she pours the poison into her own glass and drinks beside him.
Both collapse. Vasalie wakes days later in Anton’s wing and learns Gustav survived because Illian had diluted the poison with duskbane.
Illian visits and reveals his leverage: he preserved the murdered noble’s body and forged romantic letters to keep her trapped. He then orders her to smuggle a woman named Annais into the palace using Laurent.

Part Two: King of Glass
Laurent hesitantly agrees to help, and the two move Annais through hidden subterranean tunnels. Anton rediscovered and expanded these passages, which are lined with translucent sea-glass mosaics that allow secret observation of palace corridors.
Through a glass spyhole, Vasalie watches General Stova assault Marian, the cellar manager. The scene mirrors Emilia’s murder, and Vasalie decides to clear her name, expose her father, and break Illian’s hold on her.
At a dark banquet hosted by King Estienne of Central Miridran, captured raiders are auctioned into servitude. Anton outbids the entire court, paying 20,000 quatra and five chests of pearls to buy every prisoner.
He later explains that his scandalous Glory Court is not a harem but a sanctuary that relocates abused women under new identities.
During their second signature dance, Copelan kisses Vasalie onstage in front of the conclave. General Stova opens a security inquiry into Gustav’s poisoning, and both Laurent and Marian are arrested.
Consumed by guilt, Vasalie uses the tunnels to reach Anton and confesses: “I am your poisoner.” She explains Illian’s coercion, and Anton shares a newly confirmed prophecy about blood, division, and a ruler aligned with the Fate of Morta who holds a jewel in His palm.
Annais interrupts a gathering in the Dome Hall and reveals that King Estienne is her biological son. She shows a star-shaped birthmark as proof that he is a non-royal bastard, and Illian strips his older brother of the crown.
Anton takes Vasalie across the water to Philam, where they spy on Illian and Stova in a discreet establishment. Vasalie reveals her true identity as Vastianna Stova.
They overhear Stova and Princess Aesir of Brisendale plotting to marry, assassinate King Rurik, and seize Brisendale. When Illian checks the room, Anton pulls Vasalie into a passionate kiss to avoid detection.
On the rowboat back, Anton tells her that Illian pushed him off Mount Carapet when he was sixteen.
Part Three: Queen of Souls and the Ending
Vasalie wakes in Anton’s quarters, where he places a heavy sword on the mattress between them as a physical boundary. In his secret workshop, he shows her the lensgraph, a device he and Gustav invented that can record visual evidence of treason.
Copelan, jealous of her closeness to Anton, catches her emerging from the tunnels and reports her to Illian. Illian locks her away and announces that Lord Sarden’s preserved body has been “discovered,” formally framing her for murder.
For the final signature performance, representing the Lair of Morta, Vasalie wears a gown of stained molten glass and a crown fitted with removable obsidian dagger blades.
Afterward, Illian exposes forged letters claiming Anton smuggled weapons to Razam. King Rurik declares Anton a traitor and endorses Illian as High King of Miridran.
Vasalie secretly uses one of her crown daggers to slash the Brisendali flag and pin Stova’s cap to Illian’s crest, leaving a silent warning.
She navigates the tunnels to save Anton and finds him chained beneath a massive glass chandelier in Illian’s private quarters. Illian enters and demands she assassinate King Rurik with a katar dagger, promising freedom for both of them.
Vasalie agrees to spare Anton, then goes to Rurik’s balcony intending to warn him. Illian appears beside Rurik, and she realizes the assassination will happen regardless, so she stabs the king herself to buy time and protect Anton.
Illian frames Razam for the murder. Princess Aesir takes the Brisendali throne and announces her engagement to General Stova. Illian then forces Vasalie into a betrothal, revealing that twelve years earlier Stova had promised thirteen-year-old Vasalie to him in marriage.
Back in his quarters, Illian drops the heavy glass chandelier directly onto Anton, impaling him. Vasalie throws millen flour into Illian’s face, wraps a ribbon around his throat, and tackles him off the balcony, sending them both onto the stone courtyard below.
She wakes in Moranya, the realm of the Fate of Morta. Moranya explains that Anton survived death once before because he loved no one, so Morta could not claim his soul.
To save Vasalie, Anton bargains with Moranya, trading the goodness, warmth, and comfort of his soul for her revival.
Vasalie wakes in Razam, fully healed. Queen Sadira, Gustav, Laurent, and Copelan reveal that Anton’s lensgraph photographs were recovered and prove Stova and Illian’s treason to the Syndicate.
General Stova has claimed the Brisendali crown and is marching toward war.
Vasalie visits Anton in his Razami quarters. Because of his bargain with Moranya, he has lost his warmth, his memories of their love, and his emotional connection, and he looks at her with cold detachment.
She refuses to abandon him. Vasalie kisses his smirking lips and vows: “I will save you, Anton, like you saved me. This is my vow.”
