Cruel Crown Summary: A Complete Story Overview
Spoiler warning: This section reveals all major events and endings for both novellas.
Queen Song begins with Coriane Jacos, a young Silver noble from a declining house. She loves mechanics and engineering, not courtly performance.
After her uncle dies, her father moves the family to Archeon. At a palace banquet, Elara Merandus invades Coriane’s mind.
Coriane flees into a courtyard, where Crown Prince Tiberias finds her. They begin a private friendship that turns into love. Tiberias refuses to hold a Queenstrial and marries Coriane instead.
The marriage brings no peace. Coriane suffers from severe anxiety, depression, and recurring nightmares. She endures three miscarriages. Each loss follows a violent dream.
Coriane suspects Elara Merandus is attacking her mind. She confronts Elara at a ball, using her singer ability to force the truth.
Elara admits she only made Coriane trip once, on her wedding day. The nightmares are Coriane’s own.
That revelation shatters Coriane. She hires a guard named Rane Arven to block mental intrusions. Eventually, she gives birth to a healthy son, Cal. But her insomnia worsens. In her final diary entry, she describes feeling empty. A maid later finds her dead in bathwater black with silver blood. Elara discovers Coriane’s diary and destroys it. The king marries Elara soon after.
Steel Scars shifts to the Red rebellion. Captain Diana Farley receives her first independent mission, Operation Red Web. She travels into Norta with her lieutenant, Tristan.
They secure help from Boss Egan, a smuggler in Harbor Bay. Farley establishes contacts through the Whistle network. In Corvium, she meets Corporal Eastree and a young soldier named Shade Barrow.
Shade provides maps and intelligence about the fortress.
Farley disobeys direct orders from her father, the Colonel, to abandon Corvium. During a Silver raid on a safe house, Tristan draws the hunters away. Farley and Shade flee into the woods.
Surrounded, Shade grabs Farley and teleports them miles away to a stream. Shade reveals he is Red but possesses a Silver-like ability. Farley oaths him into the Scarlet Guard under her real name, Diana.
Later, Farley meets Mare Barrow in Albanus. Mare begs for help saving her friend Kilorn from conscription. Farley demands two thousand crowns, believing Mare cannot pay.
Soon after, Farley and Shade reunite in Rocasta to plan his escape from the army. While there, they see a public broadcast of the Queenstrial. Mare falls into the arena, survives electrocution, and summons lightning.
Shade recognizes his sister. He and Farley abandon their escape plans and vow to save her.
Victoria Aveyard structures the two novellas to answer questions the main series raises. Cruel Crown fills in the emotional and political backstory that drives key decisions in Red Queen.
