⚠️ Spoiler Warning: This section contains detailed, chapter-by-chapter plot summaries.
Chapter 1: The Boy Who Lived
Mr. Dursley notices strange events throughout the day—owls flying in daylight and people in cloaks whispering about the “Potters.”
That night, Albus Dumbledore arrives at Privet Drive and meets Professor McGonagall, who has been waiting in cat form. They discuss the downfall of Lord Voldemort and the deaths of Lily and James Potter.
Hagrid arrives on a flying motorbike with baby Harry, the only survivor of Voldemort’s attack. Dumbledore leaves Harry on the Dursleys’ doorstep with a letter explaining his heritage.
The wizarding world celebrates Harry as a hero while he begins a life of normalcy with his relatives, unaware of his fame.
Chapter 2: The Vanishing Glass
Ten years have passed, and Harry lives in a cupboard under the stairs while being treated poorly by the Dursleys. Dudley has become a spoiled bully, and Harry is essentially a servant in their home.
On Dudley’s birthday, the family visits the zoo, and Harry discovers he can communicate with a boa constrictor.
The glass front of the snake’s tank mysteriously vanishes, allowing the snake to escape and causing chaos. Harry is punished for the incident, though he cannot explain how it happened.
Throughout his childhood, strange things have occurred around Harry, but he remains confused about their cause.
Chapter 3: The Letters from No One
As the summer holidays begin, Harry receives a letter addressed specifically to his “Cupboard under the Stairs.” Uncle Vernon confiscates it before Harry can read it. More identical letters arrive every day, increasing in volume until dozens pour through the mail slot.
Vernon boards up the house and moves Harry to Dudley’s second bedroom, but the letters still find him. Eventually, the Dursleys flee to a remote hotel and finally to a desolate shack on a rock in the sea, hoping to escape the relentless correspondence.
As Harry counts down the minutes to his eleventh birthday at midnight, a thunderous boom shakes the door.
Chapter 4: The Keeper of the Keys
A giant man named Rubeus Hagrid breaks down the door and introduces himself as the Keeper of Keys at Hogwarts. He is outraged to discover the Dursleys never told Harry about his parents or his magical heritage. Hagrid delivers Harry’s official acceptance letter and reveals that Harry is a wizard.
He explains that Voldemort murdered Harry’s parents and tried to kill Harry, but the killing curse rebounded, leaving Harry with a lightning-shaped scar and causing Voldemort to vanish.
Uncle Vernon tries to forbid Harry from attending, so Hagrid gives Dudley a pig’s tail and escorts Harry away. Harry begins his new life the next morning.
Chapter 5: Diagon Alley
Hagrid takes Harry to London, stopping at the Leaky Cauldron, where wizards recognize Harry and shake his hand. They enter Diagon Alley through a hidden brick wall, and Harry is amazed by the magical shops.
At Gringotts, the wizarding bank, Harry discovers his parents left him a small fortune.
Hagrid retrieves a mysterious grubby package from high-security Vault 713. Harry buys his school supplies, encountering a pale, arrogant boy in Madam Malkin’s shop.
Finally, at Ollivanders, Harry finds his perfect wand—one that shares a core with the wand that gave him his scar. Hagrid sends Harry back to the Dursleys with a train ticket for September 1st.
Chapter 6: The Journey from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters
The Dursleys drop Harry at King’s Cross Station, laughing because they know he cannot find Platform 9 ¾.
Harry encounters the Weasley family, who show him how to walk through the barrier to reach the hidden platform. On the Hogwarts Express, he shares a compartment with Ron Weasley, and they bond over magical sweets and compare their families.
They meet Hermione Granger, a bossy girl who has already memorized her textbooks, and Draco Malfoy, who tries to recruit them for Slytherin. Upon arriving at Hogwarts, the first-years cross a lake in boats and see the magnificent castle for the first time. Hagrid leads them inside.
Chapter 7: The Sorting Hat
Professor McGonagall explains the four houses—Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin—and how they compete for the House Cup.
The first-years are sorted by the Sorting Hat, a magical talking hat that sings about the houses. Harry is terrified of being placed in Slytherin after hearing it produced dark wizards.
When the hat considers Harry, it notes his courage and talent, ultimately placing him in Gryffindor after Harry silently begs “not Slytherin.”
Ron and Hermione are also sorted into Gryffindor. During the welcoming feast, Harry notices Professor Snape staring at him, which causes a sharp pain in his scar.
Chapter 8: The Potions Master
Harry begins his classes, finding some teachers strict and others boring. He struggles to keep up with homework while adjusting to magical life. During his first Potions lesson, Professor Snape humiliates Harry with difficult questions and seems to hate him for no apparent reason.
After losing points for Gryffindor, Harry visits Hagrid, who lives in a hut on the edge of the Forbidden Forest.
Harry finds a news clipping about a break-in at Gringotts that occurred on his birthday and suspects the thief targeted the package Hagrid took from Vault 713.
He begins to wonder if Snape is involved and why Hagrid seems secretive.
Chapter 9: The Midnight Duel
Gryffindors and Slytherins have their first flying lesson together. Neville breaks his wrist, and while Madam Hooch is away, Malfoy steals Neville’s Remembrall.
Harry flies for the first time to retrieve it, performing an incredible dive that catches Professor McGonagall’s attention.
Instead of expulsion, Harry is made Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Malfoy challenges Harry to a midnight duel, but it’s a trap to get Harry caught by Filch.
While hiding, Harry, Ron, and Hermione discover a massive three-headed dog guarding a trapdoor in a forbidden corridor.
Chapter 10: Hallowe’en
Harry receives a brand-new Nimbus 2000 broomstick from Professor McGonagall. Oliver Wood teaches him Quidditch rules, explaining the roles of Chasers, Beaters, Keeper, and Seeker.
On Hallowe’en, Professor Quirrell announces that a troll has broken into the dungeons.
Harry and Ron realize Hermione is in the girls’ bathroom unaware of the danger.
They confront the troll, and Harry jams his wand up its nose while Ron uses a levitation charm to knock it out with its own club. Hermione takes the blame to protect them, and the three become inseparable friends.
Chapter 11: Quidditch
Harry’s first Quidditch match against Slytherin approaches, and he’s extremely nervous. During the game, his broomstick starts bucking uncontrollably, trying to throw him off.
Hermione notices Snape staring at Harry and muttering, so she sneaks over and sets his robes on fire to break the jinx. Harry regains control and catches the Golden Snitch in his mouth, winning the game.
Later, the trio tells Hagrid they suspect Snape of trying to steal whatever the three-headed dog guards. Hagrid accidentally lets slip the name “Nicolas Flamel.”
Chapter 12: The Mirror of Erised
Harry, Ron, and Hermione search the library for Nicolas Flamel but find nothing.
As Christmas approaches, Harry receives an anonymous gift: his father’s Invisibility Cloak. Using the cloak to explore at night, Harry finds the Mirror of Erised, which shows him his deceased parents and extended family. Ron sees himself as Head Boy and Quidditch captain.
Dumbledore eventually finds Harry at the mirror and explains it shows the heart’s deepest desires. He warns Harry not to dwell on dreams and tells him the mirror will be moved.
Chapter 13: Nicolas Flamel
Harry finally discovers that Nicolas Flamel is the only known maker of the Sorcerer’s Stone, an object that grants immortality and turns metal to gold. They realize the three-headed dog guards the Stone.
During Harry’s second Quidditch match, Snape referees, but Dumbledore attends, ensuring Snape doesn’t try anything. Harry catches the Snitch in record time.
After the match, Harry follows Snape into the Forbidden Forest and overhears him threatening Professor Quirrell. Harry believes Snape is trying to force Quirrell to help steal the Stone.
Chapter 14: Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback
The trio finds Hagrid hiding an illegal dragon egg he won in a card game.
The dragon, named Norbert, hatches and grows rapidly, becoming impossible to hide. Harry and Hermione contact Ron’s brother Charlie, who works with dragons in Romania, and arrange for Norbert to be taken away.
They smuggle Norbert to the top of the tallest tower at midnight.
Malfoy tries to catch them but is caught by McGonagall. However, after successfully handing off the dragon, Harry and Hermione are caught by Filch because they forgot the Invisibility Cloak.
Chapter 15: The Forbidden Forest
Harry, Hermione, Neville, and Malfoy receive detention and lose fifty points each, putting Gryffindor in last place. Their punishment is helping Hagrid find an injured unicorn in the Forbidden Forest.
Harry and Malfoy encounter a hooded figure drinking unicorn blood. The figure moves toward Harry, causing his scar to burn unbearably.
A centaur named Firenze saves Harry and explains that unicorn blood keeps a person alive but curses their life. Harry realizes Voldemort is in the forest seeking the Stone to regain power.
Chapter 16: Through the Trapdoor
Harry realizes Hagrid accidentally told the hooded stranger how to get past Fluffy.
With Dumbledore lured away to London, Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide to go through the trapdoor themselves.
They get past the three-headed dog using a flute and survive Devil’s Snare, a room of flying keys, and a giant wizard’s chess game. Ron is knocked out during chess, and Hermione stays behind to solve a logic puzzle involving potions.
Harry goes forward alone to face the thief.
Chapter 17: The Man with Two Faces
Harry enters the final room and finds Professor Quirrell, not Snape. Quirrell reveals he serves Voldemort, and Snape was actually protecting Harry. Quirrell unwraps his turban, revealing Voldemort’s face on the back of his head.
The Mirror of Erised shows Harry the Stone, which magically appears in his pocket because he wanted to find it but not use it. Quirrell tries to kill Harry, but Harry’s touch blisters Quirrell’s skin due to his mother’s protective sacrifice.
Harry passes out and wakes in the hospital wing. Dumbledore explains the Stone is destroyed and awards last-minute points to Gryffindor, securing the House Cup. Harry returns to the Dursleys for summer, knowing his true home awaits.
