Holes Summary: The Deep Dive (Spoilers)
Spoiler Warning: This section reveals major plot points and the ending.
Over 110 years ago in Latvia, Elya Yelnats falls in love with Myra Menke. He seeks help from Madame Zeroni, who gives him a piglet and tells him to carry it up a mountain daily to drink from a stream where water runs uphill.
In exchange, Elya must later carry her up the mountain and sing a lullaby. Elya wins the pig contest but forgets his promise when Myra cannot choose him. He moves to America, where bad luck plagues his family.
Meanwhile, Green Lake, Texas, is a thriving town with a schoolteacher named Katherine Barlow.
She falls in love with Sam, a Black onion seller. After they kiss, a racist mob led by Trout Walker destroys the school and kills Sam. Katherine becomes the outlaw Kissin’ Kate Barlow. From that day, no rain falls on Green Lake.
In the present, Stanley Yelnats IV is falsely accused of stealing Clyde Livingston’s sneakers. He is sent to Camp Green Lake, where he meets Zero, X-Ray, Armpit, Magnet, Zigzag, and Squid.
The boys dig holes daily under the watch of Mr. Sir and Mr. Pendanski. Stanley finds a gold lipstick tube with the initials “K B” and gives it to X-Ray.
Stanley teaches Zero to read in exchange for digging help. After Mr. Pendanski humiliates Zero, Zero hits him with a shovel and flees into the desert.
Stanley follows and finds Zero under the overturned boat Mary Lou. They survive on old spiced peaches called Sploosh. Stanley carries Zero up Big Thumb mountain, fulfilling the ancient promise and breaking the family curse.
Zero confesses he stole the sneakers. They return to camp to dig up a suitcase. The Warden and counselors surround them, but yellow-spotted lizards do not bite because of the onion juice in their blood. Stanley’s lawyer arrives and proves his innocence.
The suitcase bears the name “Stanley Yelnats.”
Camp Green Lake closes, and the land is sold to the Girl Scouts. Stanley and Zero each receive nearly one million dollars.
Stanley’s father invents a foot spray called Sploosh. The novel ends at a Super Bowl party where Zero’s mother sings the family lullaby.
