House of Dragons Summary: The Full Story

Spoiler warning: This section reveals the complete plot of House of Dragons, including the ending and the epilogue.

The Girl in the Dragon Ring

The story takes place in Alandria, a continent ruled by the Dragon Society from Draco Mountain above the capital city of Kinkadia.

Society is split into twelve noble houses, while humans and half-Fae endure segregation and slurs in the impoverished Dregs, where crime lord Dozan Rook runs the Wastes and its illegal fight arena, the Dragon Ring.

Kerrigan Argon, a half-Fae orphan abandoned at the mountain at age five, fights there under the alias “Red.” Unlike most half-Fae, she commands fire, air, earth, and water, and she suffers painful visions of future events.

After defeating a bigoted merchant named Basem Nix in the ring, a vision strikes her: black smoke, a dark prince, a screaming girl, and a figure in a red mask.

The Dark Prince Arrives

At the opening ceremony of the five-year dragon tournament, black smoke materializes into Prince Fordham Ollivier, heir to the House of Shadows, exiled a thousand years earlier after the Great War.

He demands entry to reclaim his people’s rights, and the Society grants it. Kerrigan is assigned as his escort.

Waiting on Fordham’s tribunal, Kerrigan wanders into the dragon testing chamber, where the ancient dragon Gelryn names her a vision-bearing “harbinger.” At the Dragon Blessed selection ceremony, her sponsor, Ellerby Emberton, vanishes moments before her name is called.

Left unchosen and publicly humiliated, Kerrigan watches Red Mask protests erupt outside, and her human friend Clover is arrested. Fordham quietly lends her his dark cloak so she can slip home unseen.

That night, her friend Lyam, who had just confessed his love and revealed he knew about her visions, follows her into a Dregs alley.

The assassin Isa stabs him to death, and the Society Guard dismisses it as a mugging. Refusing a dead-end steward job, Kerrigan strikes a binding bargain: one month, until the tournament’s end, to find a sponsor while working logistics under Master Bastian.

Investigation and Betrayals

A vision warns Fordham to use air magic during Task 1, saving his advancement, so the two team up to investigate Lyam’s murder.

At the scene, Fordham recovers Lyam’s gold compass. When they break into Ellerby’s town house, Isa ambushes Kerrigan and stabs her shoulder with a magic-breaking blade; Fordham drives the assassin off with shadow and fire magic and carries her to the Wastes.

A healer named Amond mends her with glowing blue light magic, and Dozan identifies Isa’s dagger as Tendrille steel stamped with the raven mark of weapons dealer Clare Rahllins.

He agrees to trace the buyer only if Kerrigan fights to the death in his ring. To keep her alive, Fordham trains her daily under one rule: kill or be killed.

A coded letter leads them to Ellerby in Archdale, flown south by the plum-purple dragon Tavry.

Ellerby confesses that Basem Nix kidnapped his young nephew Ever and blackmailed him into abandoning Kerrigan, while illegally smuggling Elsiande artifacts with Rahllins. Confined to the mountain for unauthorized travel, the pair sneaks into a masquerade ball at the mansion of Kerrigan’s estranged father, Lord Kivrin Argon.

There, noblewoman Audria Ather recognizes Kerrigan as Lady Felicity Argon, the lost princess of Bryonica discarded at age five when her half-Fae ears appeared.

Kerrigan refuses the offer to rejoin the nobility that threw her away. In the gazebo, she and Fordham share a kiss, which he breaks off after revealing a dark family curse destined to harm anyone he loves.

Isa interrupts with a message: Basem has kidnapped Kerrigan’s friends Darby and Hadrian. Fordham’s shadow magic frees the hostages at Irena Fountain, and Dozan resolves the standoff by staging a 50,000-mark death match between Kerrigan and Basem.

Basem wields an illegal sonic artifact that makes Kerrigan bleed from her ears, but the fight is a distraction; while she stalls, Fordham, Darby, and Hadrian raid his home and rescue young Ever.

Basem flees through a shadow orb, and Kerrigan presents Ever to the Society as living proof of his crimes.

The Final Task and the Ending of House of Dragons

For Task 3, competitors are portaled to a distant wilderness. Driven by a vision, Kerrigan drinks a magic-dampening potion and follows them into the toxic Noirwood Forest, where she finds a starving, hallucinating Fordham.

Guided by Lyam’s compass, they are ambushed by the bigot Darrid of Herasi, until Fordham shatters his raven medallion and summons thousands of ravens.

Kerrigan takes his arm and steps onto the spiritual plane, bypassing the ambush and landing at the final cave, where the ancient magic registers her as the fifth finalist.

In the bonding chamber, the midnight-blue dragon Tieran selects Kerrigan despite his own doubts.

During the bonding drink, she suffers a nightmare vision of a forced noble marriage instead of a true mental bond, leaving her secretly un-bonded though legally bound to her dragon.

Flying home, they find the Artisan Village ablaze, set by the Red Masks, whose supreme leader is unmasked as Basem Nix. Tieran disarms him, and Kerrigan traps the hate leader in an air cyclone for the Society Guard.

Before the High Council, Master Lorian moves to disqualify Kerrigan, but Fordham exploits a loophole: he invites her into the House of Shadows, granting her full Society membership as a dragon rider.

Gelryn then reveals her vision magic makes her a spiritcaster, the first in a thousand years, and warns she must master it or go insane.

Fordham confesses he was exiled from his own house and cannot promise her safety in his homeland, and Kerrigan rides through the victory parade with her half-Fae ears proudly displayed.

In the epilogue, Isa descends into the dungeons where Basem is chained.

Her father, the metal-masked supreme leader of the Red Masks, scolds Basem for acting prematurely and slits his throat as a sacrifice, leaving Isa trapped under his control and setting up the sequel, House of Shadows.
