Kerrigan Argon enters the book as the first half-Fae ever admitted to the Society, newly bonded to the dragon Tieran after her tournament victory.
During celebrations in Kinkadia with Clover, Hadrian, and Darby, she faces open harassment from full-blooded Fae.
In the Wastes, underground king Dozan Rook delivers grim news. Basem Nix, the captured leader of the anti-half-Fae Red Masks, has been murdered inside the fortified dungeons of Draco Mountain.
Kerrigan verifies with council members Mistress Hellina and Master Bastian that the killing was an inside job. The council orders her to stay out of it.
K.A. Linde then sends Kerrigan north with exiled Prince Fordham Ollivier, flying their dragons Tieran and Netta across Death’s Valley. They pass through the invisible barrier that has hidden the House of Shadows realm for a thousand years.
In the village of Cavour, Fordham admits Kerrigan holds no official status until King Samael Ollivier accepts her. The Fae court treats her as his concubine, so she revives an abandoned identity: Princess Felicity of the Bryonican House of Cruse, the name her father left her under at age five.
At a royal ball, Fordham’s half-sister Princess Wynter reveals she perceives magic in color. She shows Kerrigan that the barrier spell is fracturing, and that Kerrigan’s rare golden spirit magic matches its signature.
Searching hidden spy tunnels, Kerrigan and Fordham find Wynter’s secret room and a zealot movement called Wynter’s Masq.
At the group’s masquerade rally, Wynter prepares to sacrifice thirteen half-Fae and human prisoners, including Kerrigan’s attendant Bayton, in a blood ritual under the full moon.
Kerrigan reveals her red hair and spirit magic to break up the ceremony and save Bayton. Pressured to bring down the wall without bloodshed, she touches the barrier and its magic floods into her.
The surge triggers a vision of the ancient spiritcaster Mei, who cast the original spell during the Great War to shield Cavour from Society destruction. Kerrigan collapses, but her magic cracks the wall enough for Wynter’s followers to push their hands through, and Fordham carries her home to Draco Mountain.

Back in Kinkadia, Kerrigan starts a 30-day Society boot camp with Fordham, Audria, Roake, and Noda under Mistress Alura Van Horn. Alura’s father, Sword Master Lorian Van Horn, works openly to drive Kerrigan out.
Air Master Zina, revealed as Mei’s daughter, agrees to train Kerrigan in spiritcasting. At a Season ball, Kerrigan’s childhood betrothed, Lord Ashby March of Bryonica, appears and insists their marriage contract is still binding.
Kerrigan also joins secret Rights For All meetings alongside Clover, Hadrian, and Dozan Rook. The pressure takes a physical toll, as her untrained spirit magic triggers blackouts and accelerating magic sickness.
An RFA march ends in disaster when Society Guards divert protestors into an alley and Red Masks firebomb the crowd. Lorian arrests Kerrigan for inciting the riot, but Master Bastian wins her a compromise of probation and one month grounded from flying.
Then the barrier shatters completely. King Samael’s army pours out and invades the human trading city of Lethbridge, and the Society mobilizes every dragon rider.
Kerrigan invents a “crux bond” of spirit magic to link with Tieran despite their missing natural bond. At the Battle of Lethbridge, she and Fordham fight on the front lines until Wynter attacks them with illegal shadow artifacts.
Kerrigan collapses a stone battlement onto Wynter. Ancient General Trulian slays King Samael but takes a fatal shadow blast in return, and his daughter Zina freezes the battlefield to force surrender.
A harsh peace treaty turns the realm into occupied tribe Charbonnet under heavy fines. Using evidence from Dozan Rook and Clare Rahllins, Kerrigan exposes Lorian Van Horn as the Red Mask co-conspirator who trafficked artifacts and ordered Basem Nix’s murder.
Lorian is convicted of treason and executed. The Society Council reinstates Kerrigan, who renounces tribe Charbonnet and reclaims her identity as Princess Felicity of Bryonica.
The ending lands as a double blow. First comes a farewell letter: Fordham has abandoned the Society and left Kinkadia to break his family’s birth curse, refusing to let it endanger Kerrigan’s life.
Then the final twist arrives. Master Bastian is revealed as “The Father,” the true leader of the Red Masks, and House of Shadows closes with the conspiracy still running.
