How Bad Things Can Get Summary: A Brutal Island Trap

Introduction

Darcy Coates takes a familiar setup and sharpens it into something much darker in How Bad Things Can Get.

A free luxury getaway turns into a calculated trap on a remote island with a cannibalistic history.

The main character, Ruth Phillips, is not an ordinary festival guest. She carries a secret that certain people have spent two decades trying to find.

Coates is known for haunted house and isolation horror, but here she shifts toward cult terror and splatterpunk intensity.

The story uses influencer culture and true-crime obsession as the backdrop for a violent nightmare.

This book suits readers who like survival horror with a fast violent second half and a slower paranoid opening. The island setting creates constant isolation.

The influencer culture backdrop adds a modern layer to the cult horror framework.

TL;DR: The Trap Behind the Paradise

Ruth, the sole survivor of the infamous Petition cult, is tricked into attending a YouTube star’s island festival by her boyfriend. The event is a front.

Cult fanatics have infiltrated the staff and plan to sacrifice her.

Ruth escapes the first games, learns her boyfriend exploited her past, and survives a mass slaughter.

She ultimately tricks the fake cult leader into poisoning his own followers while she walks away.

Key themes include survival trauma, betrayal, celebrity worship, and morbid curiosity about true crime.

How Bad Things Can Get Summary: The Island Becomes a Killing Ground

Spoiler warning: This section recounts the full plot, including the ending.

The novel opens on Prosperity Island, a small tropical location with a cursed past. A failed 1970 cult called the Secret Door Movement starved there and resorted to cannibalism.

Locals whisper about the Cannibal Witch. Now Eton, a wealthy YouTube star, has invited hundreds of fans and influencers for five days of free drinks and games.

Ruth Phillips is one of the lottery winners. She uses that name now, but she was born Josanna. She survived the Petition mass-suicide as a child.

Her boyfriend Zach Waldon brought her here, unaware she knows the island’s history too well. Their cruise ship leaves, and the isolation begins.

The first game is called Survive the Maze. Contestants climb a wooden structure above jagged rocks. The beams break. A woman named Makayla Wells falls and is dragged over the rocks.

Eton keeps narrating into the microphone. Ruth finishes third and slaps him on the beach.

That night, Eton screens a documentary about the old cult. Drunken guests run into the jungle for a treasure hunt. By morning, a guest named Dylan is found dead at the base of a cliff.

Gilly, a podcaster, stumbles out of the trees with wooden spears through her chest and throat. Eton calls it a prank.

During an Easter egg hunt, Ruth reaches into a wall cavity inside a prop house. A hidden net of barbed fishing hooks closes around her hand. She tears the hooks out herself. A staff member quietly helps her.

Carson and Hayleigh then tell Ruth the truth. Zach had a failing true-crime podcast. He found her former caseworker and manipulated the woman’s Alzheimer’s to learn Ruth’s identity.

He dated Ruth only to expose her. Ruth runs into the jungle. Naked staff members with machetes chase her. She jumps into the ocean and survives.

The staff blocks every path. They skin the doctors inside the medical clinic. Barry, a smiling staff member, takes the stage. He announces a game of hide-and-seek. The staff strips and begins hacking guests apart in the rain.

Ruth and Zach hide in a roof cavity. They watch cultists hang victims upside down and drain blood onto the sand. Heather, Eton’s employee, drinks poison and smashes her own head against a door. Petra finds a satellite phone but is stabbed before help arrives.

Ruth is captured. Barry calls himself Barom, the reborn Petition leader. He plans to sacrifice her on the twentieth anniversary. Ruth laughs. She tells him the real Barom never cared about prophecy. The cult only followed the number seven. The anniversary means nothing.

Barry screams, “Dawn happens now.”

The cultists drink the poison and force it down Ruth’s throat.

They convulse and tear each other apart. Ruth survives because her body built immunity from the original suicide attempt. She walks into the ocean and finds Zach’s bloodless corpse floating.

She whispers that she was never the real Petition Child. She lied because she wanted to feel loved.

In the epilogue, Ruth emails Logan Lloyd and agrees to an unedited interview about the boring reality of commune life. She wants to strip the cult of its myth.
