Love in Plane Sight Summary: A High-Flying Romance

Introduction

A routine birthday flight over Northern Virginia ends with a dead engine and a highway landing. That is where Love in Plane Sight by Lauren Connolly begins.

Beth Lundberg is a 24-year-old diner waitress who has wanted to fly since she was seventeen.

George Bunsen is the reserved corporate pilot who saves her life and then offers her free flight lessons.

What follows is a slow-burn romance about money, class, family secrets, and the price of chasing an expensive dream.

The novel mixes snarky humor with heavier questions about honesty and self-worth.

Love in Plane Sight Summary

Spoilers ahead.

Beth Lundberg turns twenty-four with a flight in a single-engine Cessna arranged by her half-brother, Shawn Newton.

The pilot is George Bunsen, Shawn’s childhood friend and heir to the BBN transportation empire.

George has always been cold to Beth, and she assumes he dislikes her. Mid-flight, a cylinder rod fails and the engine dies.

George glides the plane onto a highway shoulder without injury. In the adrenaline that follows, he holds Beth’s face to calm her, and she develops an immediate crush on him.

Back at Cornfield’s Diner, Beth tries to bury the feeling. She is carrying more than a crush: her mother Charlotte survived cancer and financial ruin after an affair with Shawn’s father, BBN CEO Karl Newton.

Beth has also borrowed a large check from Shawn, claiming she will repay it when a trust fund matures. No trust fund exists.

When Shawn and George visit the diner, George notices Beth’s hesitation about flying again. He offers free flight lessons using his own planes.

Her best friend Darla pushes her to accept. Beth agrees on the condition that she pays the favor forward through aviation charity work.

Lessons begin, and George turns out to be patient and thorough. He walks Beth through weather reports, preflight checks, and cockpit controls, and her fear gradually turns into enjoyment.

On a Pilots and Paws volunteer flight carrying a rescue puppy named Buttercup, a rainstorm strands them at a motel with one room.

They share a bed, and Beth wakes to find George holding her in his sleep.

Beth also joins Shawn’s monthly book club, where George starts appearing. She learns that George refused his father’s corporate path at eighteen, lived in a van, and worked as an airport line worker.

He chose to fly private jets for BBN rather than run the business. He also explains that his marriage to Annabel was a platonic green-card arrangement.

George admits he has had feelings for Beth since the day he drove the van that brought her home to her mother’s fixer-upper years earlier.

During a Gulfstream lesson and a later visit to George’s apartment, their restraint breaks. They begin dating.

Conflict arrives from two directions. Vernon Roswell, president of the local flight club and George’s former mentor, makes degrading comments to Beth while she works a second job at Beefies Steak House.

He implies she is sleeping with George to get free lessons. Beth pulls back from George as her instructor and hires another pilot, Aden.

When George learns what Vernon said, he confronts him at the airport and revokes his access to the leased planes.

The second conflict is Beth’s lie. At a BBN wedding reception for Tasha Baylor and Annabel, Beth faces Karl Newton with George beside her.

Karl sneers that Beth is chasing George’s money and reveals that he told George years ago that Beth had a trust fund. Beth states plainly that she has never received a cent from him.

Shaken, she finally tells Shawn the truth about the borrowed money and her mother’s hospital bills. Shawn forgives her immediately and forbids her from paying him back.

Beth also reconciles with Charlotte and learns the full story of her parents’ past.

With the weight lifted, Beth completes her first solo flight. She later finishes a 150-mile solo cross-country test on her twenty-fifth birthday and earns her private pilot’s license.

George tells her he loves her on the tarmac, and she says it back.

A year later, Shawn and George leave BBN to launch Fly Free Sky Aviation, a nonprofit offering free ground school, flight training, and medical transport flights.

Shawn is dating Darla. Charlotte and Marge run a thriving plant shop called Charlotte’s Shrubbery.

Beth lives with George, his cat Jet, and her dog Grumps, working toward her commercial certification so she can teach and fly for the charity.
