Bitten Summary: The Full Story

Spoiler warning: the following section covers the plot, major reveals, and the ending of the book.

Decades before Vanessa’s story begins, Cora Severi breaks court law by falling in love with a human, biting him without permission, and killing a Wolf General during her capture.

Facing banishment as a Lone Wolf, she strikes a constellation blood bargain with her sister, Regent Sybil Severi.

Cora agrees to execute her human lover and surrender her newborn son at the castle gates. Sybil will raise the boy as her own, and Cora’s blood binds him to protect Sybil’s heir with his life. Sybil raises the two boys as Prince Sinclair and royal guard Calix.

In the present, seventeen-year-old Vanessa Hart is persuaded by her blue-haired best friend Celeste to attend a beach party in St. Augustine. A confrontation breaks out with a group of wealthy out-of-town teenagers who are secretly werewolves, including Princess Evelyn Lee.

Walking home afterward, Vanessa and Celeste are stalked by two rogue wolves. Celeste is slaughtered, and Vanessa is bitten in the side and left bleeding beside her friend’s body.

Vanessa survives. Werewolves, including Calix Severi, take her by SUV through a portal to Castle Severi, where she is locked in a stone cell. There she endures a bone-snapping transformation, haunted by hallucinations of Celeste’s ghost.

Prince Sinclair speaks to her through the cell door, urging her to fight the pain. When Vanessa completes her shift, she emerges with rare glowing purple eyes.

Brought before Queen Sybil, Vanessa resists lower-level compulsion, marking her as an Alpha. Sybil offers a choice: die, or stay at Castle Severi to train for the Ascension Rite on the winter solstice.

Vanessa enters a blood pact with the queen, driven by a desire to avenge Celeste. She is given a lavish chamber and a maid named Oona, who becomes her ally.

Her classmates are the children of global werewolf royalty, including Sinclair, Calix, Evie Lee, Eric Lee, Katerina Aston, Nettie Cox, Portia Montgomery, and Myles. Evie and her circle bully Vanessa as an inferior “Mutt,” and during one dispute Evie drives a silver dagger into Vanessa’s hand.

Vanessa undergoes her First Rite in the castle’s moon pool, where her star-gift is revealed: she is a Truthseer, able to sense absolute truths and lies. You May Also Like: other YA fantasy summaries featuring heroines with unusual magical gifts.

Tension rises when Instructor Alvarez is found murdered on the beach with his organs strung around his neck. The court descends into grief and paranoia over a possible traitor.

Meanwhile, Vanessa and Sinclair grow closer and share forbidden romantic moments. During her own investigations, Vanessa finds a hidden dungeon beneath the castle holding tortured, dying Bitten humans, including an old woman and a young child.

Convinced that Sybil or Evie is behind the illegal bites, Vanessa records her findings in a journal. Lord Allard finds the journal and gives it to the queen.

Unable to execute a Truthseer, Sybil orders Allard to shoot Oona with silver arrows, shattering the maid’s leg as punishment. Vanessa channels her rage into combat training.

In a capture-the-ribbon exercise, Vanessa uses her volleyball agility to defeat Evie, Katerina, Eric, and Portia. She reaches the final round against Calix, who yields the victory to her.

After a disturbance on the St. Augustine beach, Vanessa, Sinclair, Calix, Eric, and Evie return to the mortal realm. Confronting Evie under a streetlamp, Vanessa learns that Evie did not kill Celeste.

Evie explains that Sybil had sent the royal teens to scout an illegal Bitten situation, and they fled when scuffles broke out. They found Celeste already dead.

Calix then pulls Vanessa into the dungeon and reveals the truth: he was the wolf who killed Celeste, having lost control in his wolf form that night. He also admits that Sinclair was the second wolf, and that Sinclair bit Vanessa to save her from Calix’s lethal assault.

Calix further exposes the secret of their lineage. He is Cora Severi’s birth son, while Sinclair is Sybil’s true son. Sybil swapped the newborns because Calix was born sickly and she feared he would not grow into an Alpha prince.

On the winter solstice, the global werewolf nobility gathers in Castle Severi’s enchanted forest for the Ascension Rite. Sinclair is pronounced a Dreamweaver Alpha, and it emerges that he used his magic to manipulate Vanessa’s dreams throughout her time at court.

When called to declare his future pack mate, Sinclair rejects Princess Evelyn Lee and names Vanessa Hart instead. The declaration outrages Queen Jae and the Asian Court.

Before conflict can escalate, an ambush strikes. A horde of deformed, mutated Bitten wolves with mismatched limbs and gnarled spines slaughters the assembled court.

The massacre kills Instructor Alvarez, Instructor Shepherd, Lord Allard, Queen Jae, King Zhiyu, Prince Eric, Katerina, Myles, Oona, and Nettie. The mastermind then steps forward: Cora Severi.

Cora reveals she survived exile by sacrificing her soul to illegally bite numerous humans, including Celeste and the dungeon prisoners, building a loyal army. She also states that Sinclair worked with her all along to overthrow Sybil.

Cora forces Sybil to confess the birth swap, exposing to Calix that his aunt lied to him his entire life. Cora’s pack overpowers and executes the queen.

With the court decimated, Cora seizes the crown and claims Castle Severi. Sinclair, caught between his love for Vanessa and his devotion to his birth mother, aligns with Cora.

The book ends on a bleak cliffhanger. Vanessa, Calix, Evie, Portia, and Lyra survive the slaughter but remain trapped under Cora’s reign, forced to bow to Cora as Queen and Sinclair as Alpha in a castle built on blood-soaked lies.
