My Roommate from Hell Summary: Fake Dating a Demon Prince
TL;DR: When Your Freshman Roommate Rules Hell
Owen Greene arrives at Point University with a plan: keep his head down, keep his room tidy, and earn a computer science degree that leads somewhere stable.
Four months earlier, scientists confirmed that Hell — officially Tartarus-β — is a real dimension, reachable through a portal in Sedona, Arizona. Point University hosts the first demon exchange student in history.
That student is Prince Zarmenus Bloodletter.
Cale Dietrich’s My Roommate from Hell places an anxious human planner and a chaotic demon royal in one small dorm room, then lets the consequences unfold across a single semester.
- The setup: Owen’s assigned roommate backs out, leaving him paired with the prince of Hell in Clark Hall.
- The deal: The dean offers Owen a Google internship if he survives the semester without a diplomatic disaster.
- The lie: To avoid being dragged home, Zarmenus tells his father that Owen is his boyfriend.
- The turn: The fake relationship stops feeling fake, while an anti-demon cult and royal expectations close in.
- The ending: Both men choose each other openly, and Zarmenus stays on Earth.

My Roommate from Hell Summary
Spoilers below. This section recounts the novel’s main events in order, including the ending.
Owen Greene starts college without his best friend. Ashley stayed in Bakersfield because of an unexpected pregnancy with her boyfriend Jackson, so Owen enters Point University alone.
He expects to share Room 387 with a student named Rohit Bhatia. Instead, he opens the door to King Maleilius, Queen Lysteria, and Prince Zarmenus Bloodletter, because Rohit changed his mind at the last minute.
Zarmenus immediately reshapes the room. He builds a bunk bed, brings Bell the demon cat, and accidentally unleashes a ghoul that haunts their bathroom mirror.
The media descends on Clark Hall. Protests form outside, and a golden-masked hunter attacks with a crossbow before Zarmenus possesses him to end the threat.
Dean Leeke calls Owen in and explains the diplomatic stakes. She offers him a direct-recommendation Google internship if he completes the semester with Zarmenus without a rupture.
Owen agrees, but peace proves difficult. Zarmenus is messy, plays video games late, summons a goat that eats Owen’s clothes, and brings home late-night hookups.

After being locked out during a party night, Owen decides to request a transfer. He is willing to give up the internship to get his ordinary college life back.
Before he can do it, King Maleilius appears in the room, furious about tabloid headlines mocking his son. To avoid being forced back to Hell, Zarmenus blurts out that Owen is his boyfriend.
The King’s rage becomes joy at the idea of his son settling down with a respectable human. Once he leaves, Owen is furious.
Zarmenus begs him to continue the charade until the semester ends. They agree to a formal bargain: Owen plays the boyfriend, and Zarmenus follows a chore chart, cleans up, and stops bringing dates home.
To sell the story, Owen plans a gradual courtship. They eat at the Northside Diner, attend a Gaymers board game night at Madison’s house, and go bowling.
At the bowling alley, an anti-demon patron confronts them, and Owen publicly defends Zarmenus. Zarmenus later opens up about his childhood.

He was born under a blood moon as the Herald of the Crimson Moon, carrying a prophecy since age five that he must unify humans and demons.
Weeks pass and the line between performance and real affection blurs. At a fraternity pool party, Zarmenus nearly kisses Owen.
Back in their room, Zarmenus drops his glamour to show his horns and pointed incisors, and asks if Owen is afraid. Owen is not, and they share a passionate first kiss.
The next morning, Owen backtracks and suggests returning to friendship. He fears loving someone who leaves Earth when the semester ends.
Zarmenus’s parents then visit for dinner at an upscale restaurant. Zarmenus asks to stay a second semester, and King Maleilius flatly refuses.
Zarmenus tells Owen they should stage a public breakup at the Heaven and Hell dance so Owen can move on. Before that happens, the Order of the Golden Sun strikes.
Cult members kidnap Zarmenus from his sleep using enchanted daggers and spellwork. Owen realizes the police dispatcher is part of the cult and acts alone.
He takes a dorm pitchfork, and Bell expands into a tiger-sized monster. Together they track the cult to a campus church, defeat the cultists, and force the organization to disband.
On the night before the dance, Zarmenus drinks heavily at a pre-party and tearfully confesses his real love to Owen, unaware that Tyrell is listening outside the door.
Tyrell chooses friendship over a journalism scoop, promises not to expose the contract, and urges Owen to admit his feelings.
At the dance, Zarmenus never arrives for the planned breakup. Owen finds him grieving because Bell has fallen ill, a physical reaction to Zarmenus’s anguish.
Owen sets aside his overthinking, embraces him, and says he loves him. Reinvigorated, Zarmenus decides to defy the prophecy and stand up to his parents so he can stay.
In the epilogue, human-demon relations improve after the anti-demon groups collapse. Owen earns his Google internship, and Zarmenus wins permission to remain at Point University.
They visit Bakersfield for the birth of Ashley’s son, Oliver. Then they travel through the Sedona portal to Hell for a one-week vacation.
At the royal palace under a crimson sky, they enter Zarmenus’s bedroom, find a single heart-shaped bed, and embrace as a genuine couple.
