The kingdom of Ilya survived a plague that left survivors with abilities. These Elites are divided into Offensive, Defensive, and Mundane tiers.

People born with no power—Ordinaries—are declared diseased and are systematically killed during the Purging.

Paedyn Gray is an Ordinary.

She lives in the slums of Loot Alley and survives by using heightened observation skills to fake being a Psychic.

Her father trained her to fight. He is dead now. Her only friend is Adena, a Phaser who sews.

One day, Paedyn robs a stranger. The stranger turns out to be Prince Kai Azer, the future Enforcer. Soon after, she sees Kai attacked by a Silencer whose power blocks Elite abilities. Because Paedyn has no power, she is immune. She saves him.

The public witnesses the rescue and votes her into the sixth Purging Trials. Paedyn is forced into the palace. There, she meets the other contestants: the cruel Ace, the lethal Blair, Sadie, and the kind Jax, who is close to the princes.

Paedyn is drawn to both princes. Crown Prince Kitt is charming and asks her to be his partner for the balls. Prince Kai is intense and suspicious of her. The two engage in a tense, flirtatious game.

The Resistance contacts Paedyn.

Their leader, Calum, a Mind Reader, reveals her father was one of them. They use her childhood home as a base. They ask Paedyn to find a secret tunnel into the Bowl Arena for a demonstration.

Paedyn uses Kitt’s trust to locate the tunnel and steal his key.

The first Trial happens in the Whispers Forest. Contestants hunt each other. Ace nearly kills Paedyn. Kai saves her, stitches her wounds, and admits he finds her captivating. An alliance forms between them.

The second Trial is a climb up Plummet Mountain. Rules shift to force teamwork. Paedyn wins the flag. During this period, the Resistance launches a failed attack at a palace ball. The king uses it to tighten his grip.

The final Trial is a shifting Maze in the Bowl Arena. The goal is to reach the center and execute a criminal. Paedyn arrives to find the criminal is Adena. Before Paedyn can act, Blair uses telekinesis to kill Adena with a branch.

Paedyn holds her dead friend. The Resistance attacks through the tunnels she helped unlock. In the chaos, Paedyn chases King Edric into the tunnels.

The king fights her. He reveals Kai killed her father on his first mission as a boy. Paedyn, overcome with grief and rage, stabs the king through the throat with her father’s dagger. He dies.

Kai finds her over his father’s body. He knows he should kill her but cannot.

He lets her run, promising to find her. In the Epilogue, Kitt is crowned king. He orders his new Enforcer, Kai, to hunt Paedyn down.

She flees into the rain, now branded with a scar over her heart in the shape of an ‘O’ for Ordinary.
