Eight centuries ago, seven founding families created a blood curse to control that high magick. Every generation, seven teenage champions fight across seven enchanted Landmarks until only one survives.
The families are the Lowes, Macaslans, Grieves, Thorburns, Blairs, Paynes, and Darrows. Their champions compete in a wilderness arena tied to a central Champions Pillar in the town square.
This cycle breaks with tradition because of a book. An anonymous tell-all titled A Tradition of Tragedy exposes the tournament, its history, and the weaknesses of each family.
Journalists, cursechasers, and protestors flood Ilvernath. Agent Helen Yoo of the Kendalle Parliament’s Curse Division arrives to monitor events, and the government quietly selects Innes Thorburn as the Thorburn champion.
Alistair Lowe has been raised as the Lowe family’s weapon. Before the tournament, he learns his elders murdered his older brother Hendry to forge an invincible blood curse called the Lamb’s Sacrifice.
Isobel Macaslan never wanted to compete, but her family leaked her status and the media crowned her a “murderous sweetheart.” She steals a class ten death curse, the Reaper’s Embrace, from cursemaker Reid MacTavish and botches the casting.
Gavin Grieve comes from a family that has never won. Turned away by spellmakers, he accepts a magical tattoo from Reid that lets him channel high-level curses at the cost of his own finite life force.
Briony Thorburn trained her whole life to be champion, then learned the government picked her younger sister Innes instead. On opening night she drugs Innes, severs her sister’s pinky finger to take the unremovable champion’s ring, and enters in her place.
The seven champions carve their names into the Champions Pillar and receive their rings. At sunset, a scarlet barrier called the Blood Veil seals the tournament grounds from the outside world.
The champions scatter to claim Landmarks. Gavin takes the Castle, Alistair claims the Cave, and Finley Blair, Elionor Payne, and Carbry Darrow form an alliance at the Monastery.
Isobel and Briony are left without strongholds. Relics begin falling from the sky, and Alistair retrieves the Cloak and gives it to a defenseless Isobel, forming an uneasy alliance with her.
Briony joins Finley’s group at the Monastery and develops a theory. Because the tournament grounds form a septogram, pairing each Relic with its historically matched Landmark could dismantle the curse without killing anyone.
When the Mirror Relic falls, chaos follows. Carbry Darrow is killed in battle, Gavin is saved from deadly vines by Briony, and Alistair is gravely wounded by Elionor.
Isobel uses her magic-sensing Divining Kiss to drain Alistair’s life force to heal him, which accidentally restores her own magic. The survivors retreat to Gavin’s Castle under a temporary truce.
At the Castle, Briony presents her curse-breaking theory. Isobel, hardened by a past betrayal, incapacitates her with a rot curse and locks her in the dungeon.
Alistair secretly frees Briony and returns her spellrings. Reunited with Finley, Briony takes the Sword Relic to the Cave Landmark and drives it into the central pillar.
The Landmark and the Relic are destroyed together. The Blood Veil flickers, and the Champions Pillar in town cracks.
Meanwhile, Gavin, Isobel, and Alistair attack the Monastery. During the fight, Alistair kills Elionor Payne when she threatens a shock intruder: Hendry Lowe, resurrected as a ghostly high-magick anomaly by the unravelling curse.
The tear in the Blood Veil lets the remaining champions spill into the town square in front of swarming paparazzi. Briony casts an Overcharge spell that shatters the reporters’ cameras and ends the fight.

Gavin rejects all alliances and ambushes spellmaker Osmand Walsh in town to siphon his life force. He intends to execute Alistair and win alone.
Briony, Finley, and Isobel take shelter at Reid MacTavish’s shop. There, Reid drops his facade and reveals that he wrote A Tradition of Tragedy and orchestrated the exposure so the tournament would implode and he could seize all unsealed high magick.
The book ends with Alistair, bearing the white stain of the Reaper’s Embrace and knowing he has days to live. He returns to the Lowe estate with Hendry to slaughter his family elders and burn their legacy down.
