Rendezvous With Rama Summary: A Sci-Fi Classic by Arthur C. Clarke

The Arrival

A massive object enters the solar system.

It is initially cataloged as a simple asteroid, but its trajectory reveals an interstellar origin. This is the premise of Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama.

The story is a landmark of hard science fiction. It focuses on the process of discovery and the awe of the unknown.

TL;DR: The Core Premise

A mysterious, cylindrical alien starship named Rama enters our solar system.

The crew of the spaceship Endeavour is sent on a dangerous mission to intercept and explore it before it leaves. Inside, they discover an artificial world.

The book follows their step-by-step exploration, the awakening of the ship, and the political tension it creates back home.

The narrative begins in 2077 with a catastrophic meteor strike in Italy.

This event leads to the creation of Project SPACEGUARD, a system designed to track cosmic hazards.

Fifty years later, in 2130, SPACEGUARD radars detect an object moving fast outside Jupiter’s orbit. It is not from our solar system. Astronomers name it Rama.

Further observation reveals something impossible: Rama is a geometrically perfect cylinder. It is fifty kilometers long and twenty wide. The space probe Sita sends back images, confirming the object is artificial. The Endeavour, commanded by William Tsien Norton, is the only ship close enough to intercept it.

The crew lands on the flat end of the cylinder, essentially its North Pole. They find a way in through a series of airlocks.

Descending a half-kilometer corridor, they enter a vast, dark interior. Commander Norton fires a flare and reveals a hollow world.

A frozen sea, the Cylindrical Sea, circles the center. Massive stairways lead down to a plain dotted with geometric cities, which they name after terrestrial cities like Paris and London.

An exploratory team descends Stairway Alpha. They find the air is breathable. As Arthur C. Clarke describes it, Rama is beginning to wake up.

The closer it gets to the sun, the more the environment changes. The sea begins to thaw, and hurricane-force winds stir the atmosphere.

The crew builds a raft to cross the new ocean. They reach a mysterious island they call New York. They theorize it is a factory for creating biological robots, or “biots,” that maintain the ship.

Lieutenant Jimmy Pak makes a daring flight in a human-powered sky-bike to explore the southern hemisphere. He crashes after encountering a strange electrical storm but is rescued by his crewmates.

Meanwhile, political fear on Mercury leads to conflict. The Hermians, as they are called, see Rama as a threat. They secretly launch a nuclear missile to destroy it.

Commander Norton makes the risky decision to intercept the missile. Boris Rodrigo, a communications officer, flies a small scooter to the bomb and successfully disarms it.

The crew makes one last excursion. They find a “Temple of Glass” filled with holographic templates of Raman tools. But warning signals sound throughout the cylinder.

The biots stop their work and march into the sea. The explorers retreat to the Endeavour and pull away.

Rama then begins to move on its own. It activates a mysterious “Space Drive” and dives toward the sun. Instead of being destroyed, it uses the sun’s energy to refuel, creating a protective bubble.

It then accelerates out of the solar system.

The final thought belongs to a scientist back on Earth, who wakes with a sudden realization: “The Ramans do everything in threes.”
