Sarah Damoff’s The Bright Years begins in 1958 in Fort Worth, Texas. Young Ryan Brighton hides under a kitchen table and draws stars while his father Barton rages. His mother Elise flees with him, and she later suffers a miscarriage in a motel room.

In 1972, Lillian Wright is a grieving college student after her mother’s death. She becomes involved with musician Zack Melendez. After a Vietnam War ceasefire celebration in 1973, Lillian becomes pregnant.

Zack ends the relationship to tour with his band. In 1974, Lillian places her newborn son for adoption. That same year, her father Theodore is killed by a drunk driver.

In 1979, Lillian meets Ryan at the Fort Worth Public Library. They connect over art and shared loneliness. They marry in 1982 at Ryan’s new Sundance Gallery and combine their names to become the Brights.

The early marriage is warm, but Lillian hides her past. She suffers a miscarriage, and Elise shares her own motel-room miscarriage. In 1986, their daughter Jet is born.

The oil crash damages the gallery. Financial stress pushes Ryan to drink. By 1987, his drinking escalates. During an argument, he throws a beer bottle at Lillian. She flees with Jet.

Ryan moves out. Jet grows up next to Kendi Darnell. Ryan is erratic and misses birthdays. In 1996, at Barton’s funeral, Lillian and Ryan briefly reconnect. In 1997, she finds him drunk and lying, ending the reconciliation.

In 2000, Lillian brings Jet’s photographs to Ryan. He is nine months sober. They share a family dinner and reconcile. On July 4, 2001, Ryan re-proposes with fireworks over the Trinity River.

Shortly after, Lillian dies suddenly of cardiac arrest. Jet blames herself and Kendi. Ryan relapses. Jet moves in with Elise and struggles with depression.

In 2005, Jet runs into Kendi at a New Year’s Eve party. They reconcile. In 2009, during a trip to Palo Duro Canyon, Kendi confesses his love. Jet rejects him out of fear.

That same year, Jet receives an email from Davis Condie, Lillian’s biological son. She meets him in San Antonio. This discovery and a photographed childbirth inspire her to become a nurse-midwife. She and Kendi slowly restore their friendship.

In 2010, Elise dies. In 2011, Jet accepts that she loves Kendi. They begin a relationship. Kendi proposes in a Cessna, and they marry in April 2012.

In 2013, Jet and Kendi’s daughter Apricity is born. Ryan, shaken by a brief relapse, commits fully to AA. In 2016, he writes Apricity a legacy letter.

By 2019, Ryan has five years and seven months of sobriety but has advanced cirrhosis. In hospice, Jet tells him Apricity will be a big sister. Ryan places his hand over her heart and her belly. He dies peacefully.

In the epilogue, Kendi tucks Apricity into bed. Apricity colors a picture of Pops and notes that Pops is still shining in “the bright place” like the sun on the other side of the world.
