The New Neighbors Summary: Full Story With Spoilers
Spoiler warning: This section recounts the entire plot, including the ending.
Lena Fletcher lives in the Redland area of Bristol during a July 2024 heatwave. Recently separated from her husband Charlie, she spends most of her time with her seventeen-year-old son Rufus, who is preparing to leave for university.
When Henry and Marielle Morgan move into the renovated Victorian terrace next door, they look like a polished retired couple. Henry is a former neurosurgeon, and Marielle is a former university lecturer.
Lena’s view of them changes after she uses Rufus’s sound equipment and accidentally records the Morgans arguing. She hears them mention “taking her” and “getting caught,” with Marielle saying they did not get caught last time.
Lena tries to dismiss the conversation, but odd details keep emerging. She sees Marielle pushing a silicone fake baby in a pram while claiming to babysit a grandson.
Lena also meets a Citizens Advice client named Drew Mayhew, whose missing sister was last seen near a blue classic car like Henry’s Jaguar.
When the Morgans leave town for a night, Lena enters their house with an old spare key. She finds a wall covered in newspaper clippings about St. Calvert’s hospital, the place where she trained as a midwife.
The articles mention a baby left on hospital steps, organ harvesting, and the suicide of Dr. Hugh Warrington.
The past reveals that Henry is a sociopath who never wanted children. In 1998, when Marielle became pregnant, Henry worked with Hugh Warrington and midwife Simone Harvey to steal the baby.
Marielle was told the child died at birth, but the baby was given to another family.

Years later, Marielle suspects the truth. She and Henry hunt down those involved to find their son Peter. They kidnap Simone Harvey, and Henry kills her to keep his role hidden. They move next to Lena because they think she knows where the son is.
The Morgans lure Lena into their house by asking her to feed their cat. Marielle traps her, drugs her with a syringe, and locks her in the attic. Marielle demands to know where her son is, while Henry prepares to get rid of Lena.
Lena escapes by stabbing Marielle in the neck with a rusty nail and locking her in the attic. As she flees, she runs into Kit, Rufus’s guitar teacher. Kit reveals he was the baby left on the hospital steps—he is the Morgans’ stolen son Peter.
Kit enters the house to confront his parents. Marielle realizes Henry orchestrated the theft and the murders. Henry lunges at Marielle with a knife, but Kit stabs Henry to death in the kitchen.
The police arrive to find Henry’s body, but Marielle and Kit have vanished.
It is later discovered that Kit helped Marielle escape to a remote lodge in the Scottish Highlands.
Lena returns to her midwifery training and decides to sell her house once Rufus leaves. The novel ends with a new family moving in next door.
