Vaasalisa “Vaasa” Kozár wakes in a frigid island prison in the Iron Bay, held after the murder of her brother Dominik and the election of her husband Reid as Headman of Icruria. Royal advisor Ozik and the sadistic Lord Vlacik subject her to physical and magical torture.

Ozik forms a dark bargain link that leeches her Veragi magic, leaving her drained. He then parades a bruised Vaasa through the streets of Mekës, claiming Asteryan forces rescued her from Icrurian captivity.

The Asteryan Archbishop annuls her marriage to Reid. To guarantee her compliance, Ozik keeps her closest friend, the Veragi witch Amalie, imprisoned in the same facility.

Installed in her late parents’ private wing of the Iron Fortress, Vaasa searches her father’s desk and finds her brother Dominik’s hidden journal. It contains records of witch torture, drawings of the demon Miro’dag, and notes on the deity Zetyr.

Reid, meanwhile, leads Icrurian forces into northern Asterya and destroys the Innisjour dam to restore water to eastern Icruria. Learning of the annulment, he refuses to accept it, fakes a battle injury and a retreat, and travels toward Mekës.

At sea he meets Sachia, an Imros witch and captain of The Red Corsair. Reid trades salt rights and help rescuing her imprisoned brother Micha for passage into Iron Bay and support infiltrating the city.

Disguised as salt merchants, Reid, his councilor Koen, and his mother Melisina enter Mekës. Noble suitors crowd the court to win Vaasa’s hand and the throne.

Vlacik attempts to force himself on Vaasa, while the ambitious Lord Patrik Karev offers a political partnership instead. Vaasa also learns that her childhood love Roman Katayev, long believed dead, now serves as her lead sentinel.

Roman secretly works with Vlacik and the pirate captain Sutherland. Vaasa uses a hidden passage to reach the brothel The Lady Fortune, where she reunites with Reid in a private room.

They reaffirm their love, and Vaasa proposes playing along with Karev’s courtship to buy time and access the prison. That night, Reid throws Vlacik from a fifth-story window at the brothel, killing him.

Karev uses the murder and rumors of an affair with Roman to blackmail Vaasa into a formal engagement. During mandatory magic training in the greenhouse, Ozik forces her to feed on others’ emotions to harness Veragi power.

Vaasa discovers that Ozik is possessed by the ancient deity Zetyr, who seeks to extinguish all witch bloodlines, while Ozik’s human mind fights for control inside. Ozik reveals that Vaasa’s mother Vena hid a black stone necklace, one third of a Zetyr anchor talisman, in her sarcophagus.

Vaasa retrieves the necklace from the city mausoleum. It suppresses magic on contact and shows her visions of Ozik’s past love Julianna and their daughter Ellena.

Ozik offers a bargain: he will help them escape if Vaasa travels to Wrultho, unites the three anchor pieces, and permanently seals Zetyr. Karev then discovers Reid’s presence in the city and arrests Koen by mistake, scheduling his public execution at the iron pole during an engagement celebration at the Sanctum.

Vaasa, Reid, Sachia, and Melisina strike back together. Sachia’s crew detonates hidden black powder charges and sets the Sanctum ablaze.

In the Emperor’s Suite, Vaasa unleashes her Veragi wolf manifestation and kills Lord Karev. She tricks Roman, steals his keys, and locks him inside a servants’ tunnel before unleashing raw Veragi magic in the plaza to clear her path.

They row to the island prison, where Sachia frees Micha and Vaasa frees Amalie, who is briefly inhabited by the goddess Veragi. On the connecting bridge, Zetyr takes full control of Ozik and attacks with the Miro’dag.

Veragi’s power in Amalie holds Zetyr back while Vaasa uses the necklace to disrupt his magic. Vaasa throws the necklace to Reid, summons her full wolf form to destroy the Miro’dag, and leaps into the sea with him.

They are pulled aboard The Red Corsair. As Asteryan warships chase them into the Loursevain Gap, Vaasa, Melisina, and Sachia combine their magic to collapse a massive iron tower into the channel and block the pursuit.

Sailing toward Icruria, Vaasa and Reid rest together in a hammock. Ozik’s voice then echoes in Vaasa’s mind across their still-unbroken bargain link: “Remember our bargain.”

In the epilogue, Zetyr remains in full control of Ozik’s body in Mekës alongside Roman and Captain Sutherland, while Ozik’s conscious mind stays trapped in the dark tomb of his own thoughts, waiting for Vaasa to reach Wrultho.
