Two Dead Wives Summary: The Full Story
Spoiler warning: This section recounts the entire plot, including the ending.
Adele Parks sets the story against the spring and summer of 2020, when COVID-19 lockdowns emptied UK streets and intensified every character’s isolation.
Forty-three-year-old Kylie Gillingham has been missing for nearly two weeks when Detective Constable Clements and Constable Tanner take over the case.
With no body to work from, the police discover that Kylie lived as Leigh Fletcher with landscape gardener Mark Fletcher and his two sons, Oli and Seb, while also living as Kai Janssen with wealthy Dutch banker Daan Janssen in a London penthouse.
Physical evidence shows she was chained to a radiator in an empty apartment six floors below Daan’s penthouse. Daan, out on bail in the Netherlands, insists he is being framed.
Meanwhile, Kylie’s best friend of twenty-three years, Fiona Phillipson, moves into Mark’s home to help care for the boys and begins a secret physical relationship with him.
Unknown to the police and her husbands, Kylie is alive. She survived a fall into the ocean and was rescued by Kenneth Jones, a retired GP living in a remote Somerset cottage.

Because of severe head trauma, Kylie has amnesia. Kenneth manipulates her into believing she is his daughter Stacie Jones, who is recovering from a brain tumor operation. He shaves her head, keeps her sedated, and uses the lockdown to isolate her.
As summer heat builds, Kylie experiences flashbacks of a copper bathtub, a burnt-orange dress, two little boys, and a grave. She meets Prue McCullen, who tells her, “You are the dead woman… You are not Stacie Jones.”
On Super Saturday, July 4, 2020, Kylie slips to a Lyme Regis library. Kenneth finds her, drags her back to the cottage, and locks her inside. She realizes she is a prisoner.
Daan secretly contacts Oli and Seb through Call of Duty: Warzone, sends Oli one thousand pounds, and warns that Fiona is the real threat.
The boys run to Fiona’s holiday bungalow in Dorset, where Oli discovers all photographs of Kylie have been removed.
Fiona panics, spikes Seb’s breakfast with liquid MDMA, abducts him, and leaves Oli tied and gagged. She plans to cross the English Channel to France and raise Seb as her own son.
At the cottage, Kylie confronts Kenneth, and her memories return. She remembers her bigamy, her husbands, and the boys. Kenneth confesses that the real Stacie Jones died ten years earlier, killed accidentally during a struggle and buried under the sea glass in his garden.
Kenneth also says he saw Fiona push Kylie off a cliff before he rescued her from the surf. Kylie escapes the locked cottage and smashes the kitchen window at Fiona’s bungalow to free Oli.
Kylie and Kenneth drive to the harbor and chase Fiona by boat. Daan lies to police to charter a private helicopter, bringing DC Clements to Dorset.
On the water, Fiona rams their boat. The collision throws Kenneth overboard, flips Fiona’s boat, and hurls the drugged Seb into the sea. Kylie dives into the water, rescues Seb, and Kenneth helps haul him aboard before drowning.
Daan arrives by helicopter and pulls Kylie and Seb to safety. Seb recovers in hospital. Fiona confesses to kidnapping, attempted murder, and false imprisonment, and is imprisoned.
Stacie Jones’s remains are recovered from Kenneth’s garden and given a proper burial. Mark Fletcher divorces Kylie but allows her to stay in Oli and Seb’s lives.
Kylie meets Daan at the Pig Hotel in Combe. Daan reveals he has booked them a room, and they move toward a complicated future together.
