The Gilded Blade Summary: A Deep Dive into the Plot
Spoiler Warning: The following section recounts the main events, including the ending.
The book begins with Avery Grambs vanishing, leaving only a note with an infinity symbol. Jameson Hawthorne interprets this as a clue leading him to Prague.
At the same time, Grayson Hawthorne and Lyra Kane track down Toby Hawthorne in Texas.
In Louisiana, Gigi, Savannah, Rohan, and Knox search for Brady Daniels. They discover he was recruited by a mysterious woman known as the Duchess. This leads them to a girl named Nora, a trained warrior who warns them about a brutal trial called the Crucible.
The different groups share information and realize the current cycle of the society is unique. All three candidates in the Crucible have a direct connection to the Hawthornes: Avery, Eve, and Freya.
At Hawthorne House, the allies find a hidden planetarium and a collection of custom keys. These were left by the late Tobias Hawthorne to guide them to the society’s headquarters, an estate named Vantage.
Lyra discovers her own hidden past. She learns she is the biological daughter of Katalin Aquila Reyes, a high-ranking member of the Gilded Blade who faked her death years earlier.
Jameson and Grayson travel to London and infiltrate the Devil’s Mercy, a gambling club connected to the society. Jameson makes a dangerous deal with his uncle to gain access to their records.
They learn that Alice Hawthorne has been subtly manipulating events for years to lead her family to this moment.
The action moves to the Scottish estate of Vantage for the final trial. Jameson, Grayson, and Toby are captured and held in a chamber of mirrors and blades.
The true identity of the current Watcher is revealed to be Emily Laughlin, who was also presumed dead.
Alice Hawthorne, serving as the Judge, reveals her master plan. She believes the Gilded Blade has become too violent and has set a trap to destroy it.
She gives a poisoned Jameson an antidote and guides him and Grayson to safety.
As the lethal trial reaches its peak, Nora detonates explosives. The entire estate of Vantage collapses into the sea. The explosion kills the three leaders: Alice, Katalin, and Emily.
Toby Hawthorne also dies protecting Avery and Eve from the collapse. Avery and Eve survive in a reinforced bunker. The public story reports the event as a natural disaster, keeping the society’s existence a secret.
Eight months later, Avery and Jameson are engaged.
Avery, Eve, and Nora have begun rebuilding the organization as a non-lethal force.
Grayson and Lyra prepare for a normal life at college.
