The story moves between two timelines: the past at Lockland University and the present in the city of Merit.

Ten years ago, Victor Vale and Eli Cardale are competitive pre-med students. Eli writes his senior thesis on the theoretical existence of EOs—people who gain abilities after surviving near-death experiences.

He believes adrenaline, genetic predisposition, and sheer will can trigger a permanent transformation.

Victor, unwilling to be a footnote in Eli’s discovery, pushes them toward practical experimentation. Eli goes first, drowning in an ice bath before being resuscitated. He emerges with the power of regeneration—his body heals from any wound almost instantly.

Victor follows, using electricity to stop his heart. He returns with a different gift: the ability to manipulate pain, dialing it up or down in himself and others.

But during his experiment, Victor loses control. Angie Knight—Eli’s girlfriend and Victor’s first real friend at Lockland—is electrocuted and dies.

Eli’s mind fractures in the aftermath. He interprets his survival as divine intervention and concludes that all other EOs are unnatural abominations.

He betrays Victor to Detective Stell, and Victor is sentenced to ten years in prison. Eli begins a secret crusade, hunting and killing every EO he can find.

In the present, Victor escapes from Wrighton Penitentiary with his cellmate, Mitch Turner—a gentle giant and brilliant hacker with no powers but unshakable loyalty.

They head to Merit, where Eli has embedded himself within the police department.

Along the way, Victor rescues Sydney Clarke, a twelve-year-old girl shot and left for dead. Sydney is an EO with a rare ability: she can resurrect the dead.

Her older sister, Serena, is the one who betrayed her. Serena possesses vocal compulsion—anyone who hears her voice must obey her commands. She now works alongside Eli, controlling the Merit police to cover his kills.

Victor, Mitch, and Sydney form an unlikely family. Victor learns Eli uses the police database to locate EOs and then executes them. To draw Eli out, Victor resurrects one of Eli’s previous victims, Barry Lynch, and sends him into a bank as bait.

Victor also recruits Dominic Rusher, a former soldier and EO who can travel through shadows. Dominic lives in constant physical pain, and Victor offers him relief in exchange for tactical support.

Everything converges at midnight at the Falcon Price high-rise, an abandoned construction site. Victor’s strategy is cold and precise. He kills Serena first, slashing her throat before she can use her voice to turn the police or Mitch against him.

What follows is brutal. Victor and Eli fight with everything they have. Victor tortures Eli with waves of pain. Eli binds Victor with wire and drives a knife into his chest. Victor dies.

Eli stands victorious, expecting the arriving police to see him as a hero. But without Serena’s compulsion, Detective Stell and his officers see only a blood-soaked man standing over a mutilated body. Eli is arrested for multiple murders.

Two nights later, Sydney, Mitch, and a reluctant Dominic dig up Victor’s grave. Sydney places her hands on his chest and resurrects him—for the second time.

Victor opens his eyes and smiles. Vengeance is complete.
