You Like It Darker Summary: What Happens In The Dark

⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD: This section recounts major plot events, including endings, across the collection’s key stories.

The collection opens with “Two Talented Bastids,” narrated by Mark Carmody.

Mark has spent his life wondering how his father Laird—a celebrated novelist—and Laird’s friend Butch LaVerdiere—a renowned artist—both achieved sudden, extraordinary creative success in their mid-forties.

After Laird’s death, Mark discovers a hidden manuscript. It details a 1978 hunting trip in Maine’s 30-Mile Wood where the two men encountered an extraterrestrial “dump picker” named Ylla.

They helped the being, and in return, another alien gifted them a “primal” breath that unlocked their latent genius.

Mark later finds the alien device in their decaying cabin. It will not open for him. He remains in his father’s shadow.

“Danny Coughlin’s Bad Dream” spans novella length. Danny, a quiet custodian in Kansas, experiences a hyper-vivid dream of a woman’s body buried behind an abandoned gas station.

When he finds the real body of Yvonne Wicker and reports it, Inspector Franklin Jalbert of the KBI fixates on him.

Jalbert suffers from arithmomania—a compulsion to count everything. His mind demands logical order. A psychic dream does not fit.

The real killer is eventually caught in another state, clearing Danny.

But the victim’s grieving brother nearly beats Danny to death before the truth emerges. Jalbert, unable to accept his failure, attempts to kill Danny in his hospital bed.

A second premonition warns Danny, and he survives. Jalbert takes his own life.

“Rattlesnakes” brings back Vic Trenton, the father from King’s earlier novel Cujo. Now a widower retired to Florida, Vic befriends his neighbor Allie Bell.

Allie pushes an empty double stroller everywhere—a memorial to her twin children, who died from rattlesnake bites forty years earlier.

Allie dies and leaves Vic her estate, including the stroller. Soon, Vic is terrorized by the spectral twins, who appear as grotesque adult-child hybrids.

He drags the stroller to a remote shell beach and hurls it into a powerful whirlpool. As the stroller vanishes, Vic receives a final, comforting vision of his own deceased son, Tad.

The collection ends with “The Answer Man.” Phil Parker encounters a roadside entity three times across his life. The Answer Man provides accurate, painful glimpses of Phil’s future—including the deaths of his son and wife.

Years later, dying and facing the “gray,” Phil asks one final question: is there anything after death? The Answer Man replies: “Yes.”

Other stories include “Finn,” where a man is kidnapped due to mistaken identity and tortured. “Willie the Weirdo” follows a boy’s unsettling bond with his dying grandfather.

“The Turbulence Expert” reveals a secret organization that weaponizes fear to prevent plane crashes. “Laurie” tells of a widower saved by a puppy.

“The Dreamers” exposes a Vietnam veteran to a nightmare experiment involving the boundary of sleep.
