Howl’s Moving Castle Summary: The Full Story

Spoiler Warning: This section reveals the complete plot, including the ending.

Sophie Hatter lives in Market Chipping, in the magical kingdom of Ingary. After her father dies, the family hat shop falls into debt. Her stepmother Fanny arranges apprenticeships for Sophie’s two younger sisters.

Lettie is sent to a pastry shop. Martha is sent to study with a local witch. The sisters secretly swap places, since Lettie wants magic and Martha wants marriage.

Sophie stays behind. She believes her fate as the eldest is to fail. One day, the Witch of the Waste enters the shop. She mistakes Sophie for Lettie, whom she sees as a rival for Wizard Howl’s attention.

The Witch curses Sophie, turning her into a withered old woman. Sophie cannot tell anyone about the spell.

Rather than panic, Sophie accepts the change. She feels strangely free. She leaves Market Chipping and heads into the hills. Along the way, she rescues a trapped dog and sets a scarecrow upright.

At night, she finds shelter inside Wizard Howl’s moving castle.

Inside the castle, Sophie meets Michael Fisher and Calcifer. Calcifer is a fire demon. He recognizes Sophie’s curse and offers a deal.

If she can figure out the terms of his contract with Howl and break it, he will remove her spell. Sophie agrees and appoints herself the castle’s cleaning lady.

Howl returns and allows her to stay. He is not the monster from local rumors. He is vain, avoidant, and dramatic. He spends hours on beauty spells and avoids any serious responsibility.

The castle’s front door has a four-way knob. Depending on its position, the door opens to different places: the hills, Porthaven, Kingsbury, or a strange black nothingness.

Sophie’s cleaning disrupts Howl’s magical supplies. When his hair dye turns the wrong color, he throws a tantrum.

The castle fills with green slime and screaming phantoms. Sophie calls him a slitherer-outer. She accuses him of running from anything unpleasant.

Michael is working on a puzzling spell. Howl later realizes it is not a spell. It is a poem by John Donne that came through the black door.

The black door leads to Wales, Howl’s original home. The poem is actually a curse from the Witch of the Waste. It will fully activate on Howl’s ten thousandth day, which is Midsummer Eve.

The King of Ingary wants Howl to find his missing brother, Prince Justin. Howl does not want the job. He sends Sophie to the palace, disguised as his mother, to ruin his reputation.

The plan backfires.

The King is impressed and appoints Howl as Royal Wizard anyway.

Sophie also visits Mrs. Pentstemmon, Howl’s old tutor. The old woman sees Sophie’s hidden magic. Sophie can talk life into objects. Mrs. Pentstemmon warns that Howl’s contract with Calcifer is dangerous.

His heart is missing. The Witch of the Waste later murders Mrs. Pentstemmon.

Howl moves the castle to avoid the Witch. He relocates its entrances to the old hat shop and a ruined mansion. Sophie starts a flower business. A mysterious dog follows them.

The dog is actually a cursed man named Gaston, also called Percival. He was assembled by the Witch from parts of Prince Justin and Wizard Suliman.

The scarecrow that Sophie helped earlier keeps appearing. It carries part of Wizard Suliman. Miss Angorian, a schoolteacher from Wales, enters the castle through the black door.

She is actually the Witch’s fire demon in disguise. Her goal is to steal Howl’s heart from Calcifer.

On Midsummer Eve, the Witch captures Miss Angorian. Howl fights the Witch and defeats her. But Miss Angorian invades the castle and grabs Calcifer. Squeezing him causes Howl to scream.

Sophie uses her walking stick to beat Miss Angorian. She separates Calcifer from Howl’s heart. Calcifer is freed. Sophie presses the heart back into Howl’s chest.

Howl revives. Sophie’s curse lifts. She becomes a young woman with red-gold hair. Prince Justin and Wizard Suliman are restored.

Howl and Sophie decide to live together, resolved to continue their unusual life in the moving castle.

Quotes from Howl’s Moving Castle

“In the land of Ingary, where such things as seven-league boots and cloaks of invisibility really exist, it is quite a misfortune to be born the eldest of three. Everyone knows you are the one who will fail first, and worst, if the three of you set out to seek your fortunes.”

“You’re a slitherer-outer, that’s what you are! You slither away from anything you don’t like!”

“Busy old fool, unruly Sophie,”

“Well, he’s fickle, careless, selfish, and hysterical,”

“Not likely!” Howl yelled. “I’m a coward. Only way I can do something this frightening is to tell myself I’m not doing it!”
