The Library After Dark Summary (Spoilers Ahead)
Spoiler warning: This section reveals major plot points, the ending, and the killer’s identity.
On Valentine’s Day in New York City, bookseller Aria Stokes receives a rare letterpress copy of The Dark Hearth Tales from her boyfriend Jasper Knox. Jasper, an architect, has secured tickets to an exclusive after-dark tour of the Daedalus Library.
The event celebrates the return of the original 18th-century manuscript after two years of restoration. Aria hides her fear: the library was her childhood home until she was cast out fifteen years ago after a traumatic incident.
At the library, librarian Saskia Voss greets eight guests. They include Aria, Jasper, professor Callum Greene, author Michelle Baudelaire, teacher Wes Martinez, retired nurse Ruth Howard, and journalist Piper Kingston. Saskia requires liability waivers covering dismemberment and paranormal occurrences.
Soon after entry, the lights extinguish simultaneously. The elevator drops four stories before jamming. The group proceeds on foot into themed chambers, where hidden motivations begin surfacing among the guests.
Nurse Ruth reveals she was Evangeline Riordan’s hospice caregiver before Evangeline’s death, which was ruled a suicide. Ruth believes Evangeline was murdered and snuck onto the tour to find proof. Moments later, Ruth collapses, coughing black soot and blood, and dies on the marble floor.
Panic erupts. Saskia tries to lead survivors to an exit, but every door locks automatically. In the Rose Room, Aria touches arsenic-coated wallpaper and suffers chemical burns. While treating her hand, she discovers a police badge in Jasper’s pocket.
Jasper admits he lied about being an architect. He claims to be an undercover NYPD detective investigating Evangeline’s death. Aria realizes he targeted her at the bookstore to gain access through her.
In the Natural History Wing, a guillotine blocks the archway. As the group passes beneath it, the blade drops and kills Michelle Baudelaire instantly. The falling blade splits the survivors into two groups.
Callum Greene breaks down and confesses he blackmailed Evangeline for sixteen years after catching her wrapping a corpse. He believes Evangeline invited them all to execute them for knowing her secrets.
Callum forces his arm through an iron gate to reach a latch. An unseen sharp object impales him through the back, killing him on the landing.
In Natural History, Piper confronts Wes Martinez, who admits his real name is Weston Iverson, grandson of collector Grant Iverson. Piper becomes trapped in a sealed glass room where a copy of The Dark Hearth Tales is burning.
Piper collapses behind the glass as the fire consumes the oxygen. Shortly after, Wes’s body is found hanging by museum wire from a balcony.

Aria and Jasper track Saskia to the Fairy Tales and Folklore Room. Saskia holds them at gunpoint and reveals her true identity: Saskia Kaufmann, sister of Ansel Kaufmann, a book restorer who vanished sixteen years ago.
Saskia peels the green vellum off the manuscript, exposing a board caked in dried blood. She infiltrated the library to prove Evangeline murdered her brother.
Escaping Saskia, Aria and Jasper enter Evangeline’s private office. Jasper confesses his full truth: he is not a detective. His real name is Jasper Iverson, brother to Wes and grandson of Grant Iverson.
Jasper reveals that The Dark Hearth Tales is a complete forgery. Grant fabricated it using stolen journals written by young Evangeline, then sold it to her for $1.2 million to cover gambling debts.
Jasper broke into the library to steal the book back before scholars exposed the fraud. Aria and Jasper descend into Subterranean Level 4: The Vault, where Saskia corners them with the blood-stained book.
Piper Kingston steps from the shadows, alive. She reveals her true identity: Eden Riordan, Evangeline’s biological granddaughter and Aria’s childhood foster sister.
Eden orchestrated the entire trap. She discovered ledger records showing Evangeline paid massive blackmail sums and believed her grandmother was a serial killer.
A flashback reveals that fifteen-year-old Aria witnessed Evangeline’s daughter Alice murder a contractor. Young Aria trapped Alice inside the Vault, where she died.
Evangeline covered up Alice’s death and cast Aria out to protect her. Aria spent fifteen years believing she was a monster.
Eden prepares to execute Jasper and force Aria to help cover up the night’s killings. Aria grabs a pointed bone folder and drives it into Eden’s neck, killing her.
Aria retrieves the blood-stained Dark Hearth Tales and hands it to Jasper. The two emerge as the sole survivors.
Five weeks later, Aria is back at the Read Albatross bookstore. She served nine days in jail before authorities verified her actions were self-defense. Jasper visits her.
Evangeline’s attorney delivers a sealed letter written just before her death. Evangeline reveals that Grant stole her journal and forged the manuscript. When Grant tried to blackmail her, Alice murdered him, spilling blood across the book cover.
Evangeline spent her life protecting her family. In her final hours, she wrote a confession clearing Aria’s conscience and bequeathing the entire library estate jointly to Aria and Eden.
Aria finally realizes she is forgiven and free to step out of the shadows. Â
