Behind These Four Walls Summary: Inside the Corrigan Estate
Spoiler warning: this section covers the full plot, including the ending.
Thirteen years before the novel’s main events, a family of four died in a car crash on High View Drive on Bowen Mountain.
The crash was caused by a teenage prank involving Bennett Corrigan and his friends Danny Crawford, Roger Monroe, and James Mitchell. Bennett pressured the group — including his half-sister Edie — to report it as bystanders and stay silent.
Edie was the daughter of TCG chairman Victor Corrigan and his late assistant, Elise Parker.
Victor’s second wife, Brooke, resented both the affair and the illegitimate child, so she tricked teenage Edie into giving almond-tainted cookies to her little half-sister Holland, who had a lethal nut allergy. Brooke then used an EpiPen and blamed Edie, and Victor believed her.
Alienated from her father, Edie left the estate and moved to Daytona, Florida, where she went by Eden Galloway. There she met Isla Thomas, a state ward living in group homes, and the two became inseparable.
After Elise died of cancer, eighteen-year-old Eden and sixteen-year-old Isla decided to run away to Los Angeles.
On the way, they stopped in Charlottesville, where Eden left Isla in Room 12 of the Red Roof Inn. Eden promised to return after settling “unfinished business” with the Corrigans and went to the abandoned Abbott farm barn with an audio recorder.
She demanded that Bennett and his friends either confess to the fatal crash or pay her enough money to start over.

Danny shoved Eden, and she fell onto jagged glass from a broken window frame.
The teenagers panicked and fled, leaving her bleeding on the floor. She crawled toward the road, where Jackson Russell — the foundation lawyer and secretly Bennett’s biological father — found her, pulled the glass shard from her wound, took her tape, and buried her body on the estate grounds.
Jackson then forged a letter in Eden’s handwriting and told Victor she wanted nothing more to do with the family. Isla waited at the motel for days, took the backpack of savings Eden had left her, and went to LA alone, where a woman named Charli Galveston provided her with a fake ID reading Isla Thorne.
Isla eventually earned her degree and built a three-person “discovery” team with hacker Reynaldo “Rey” and actress Natalie “Nat” Wang. Six months before the present timeline, the team took a contract involving Matthew Leonard, an accountant at TCG. After Isla delivered a file on his affair, Leonard was publicly framed for embezzlement and shot himself in his car.

Rey’s deeper hack revealed that the affair had been staged and the money had actually been siphoned by Bennett Corrigan and Danny Crawford. Guilt over Leonard’s death, and a glimpse of Victor Corrigan at the PR firm, pushed Isla to travel to Charlottesville and infiltrate the family directly.
In the present, Isla rents Room 12 at the Red Roof Inn, where “EG & IT WERE HERE” is still carved into the desk, and builds an evidence wall inside the closet. She stages a meeting with nineteen-year-old Holland Corrigan by helping her with a flat tire, and slips Holland’s keys into the Uber seat so she can return them the next day.
At the estate, Isla meets Victor, Brooke, eldest son Myles, Bennett, Holland, and Jackson Russell. When the family argues about an upcoming “Man of the Year” profile on Victor, Isla volunteers to write it, and Victor accepts.
Brooke, suspicious of the newcomer, refuses to house her in the guest quarters and sends her to staff housing. Isla uses the arrangement to befriend house manager Mae, head groundskeeper Lawrence, and staff members Lisa and Doris, and later inserts a USB drive carrying Rey’s malware into Victor’s computer.
Her field research turns up pieces of Eden’s past: a server named Becca at Mabel’s Country Kitchen, Detective Tolson Bowen, who recognizes Isla from ten years earlier, and Eden’s theater friend Sara. She also visits James Mitchell, now a reclusive wreck, who admits guilt about an accident and Eden’s departure but grows suspicious when Isla calls her “Eden.”
Using a master key from Mae, Isla enters Eden’s preserved bedroom and finds a handwritten note hidden in a Mommie Dearest VHS case. Victor catches her there and erupts over the violation of his daughter’s room, giving Brooke the opening she wants.
Brooke places almond liqueur on the parlor bar and suggests Isla offer Victor a scotch with something sweet in it. Isla serves the drink, unaware of Victor’s severe almond allergy, and he collapses in anaphylactic shock before Dixon and Myles revive him with an EpiPen.
Mae and Lawrence explain that Brooke staged the entire scene to discredit Isla, repeating the same trick she used on teenage Edie years earlier. Determined to find hard proof, Isla breaks into Jackson Russell’s home and opens his office safe.
Inside she finds an unsigned revised will naming Bennett as sole heir, along with Eden’s vintage handheld recorder. On the tape she hears Eden recording Danny’s admission about the fatal crash, then a shove, shattering glass, and silence.
Jackson returns unexpectedly, and Isla hides in his bedroom closet, where she overhears an intimate conversation with Brooke and learns Jackson is Bennett’s real father. James later drives her to the Abbott farm barn to explain what happened, and Danny Crawford sets the barn on fire.
Isla and James escape, and Danny chases them down the mountain road in his truck. James steers into a head-on collision; Danny dies instantly, James ends up in the ICU, and Isla walks away with minor injuries.
While Isla recovers, Brooke brings Charli Galveston from Los Angeles into the Corrigan mansion. In front of the family, Charli reveals that Isla is really Isla Thomas, a former Florida state ward and Eden’s friend, and a devastated Victor orders her off the property.
Myles follows Isla to the Red Roof Inn, where she shows him her closet evidence wall and plays Eden’s recording. Convinced his sister was murdered, Myles agrees to work as a double agent inside his own family.
Using an invoice photo from Jackson’s office, Isla tracks a storage unit to Ruckersville and picks the lock on unit H48. Inside, under a tarp, she finds Roger Monroe’s missing yellow Jeep, marked with dried bloodstains and glass fragments.
On the night of Victor’s Man of the Year gala, Myles gathers the family in the estate’s private home theater. Isla steps forward and plays Eden’s tape for Victor, Brooke, Bennett, Jackson, Dixon, and Holland, exposing the crash cover-up and the confrontation at the barn. Myles punches Bennett as the room breaks apart.
Isla then activates a tracking app; Myles had planted GPS trackers on the family vehicles. The group follows the signal into the woods, where Jackson, Brooke, and Bennett are caught with shovels, trying to move Eden’s body.
Confronted by Victor, Jackson admits that Bennett is his biological son and that he personally killed Eden ten years ago. Police detain Brooke and Bennett while Jackson flees into the dark, and workers dig up Eden’s remains along with her mother’s gold locket.
Later that night, Jackson slips back into the house and enters Victor’s study with a Glock. Isla intervenes, Victor fights Jackson to protect her, and Isla drives Holland’s fencing saber through Jackson’s hand, pinning him until Myles and the police arrive.
In the epilogue, Jackson faces life in prison, Victor begins divorce proceedings and cuts Brooke and Bennett out of the estate, and Myles is positioned to take over TCG. Eden is finally laid to rest, and Myles and Isla stand on the estate balcony at sunrise, looking toward a future built on the truth.
