Spoilers ahead. The full story is recounted below.

The novel opens with Lessia trapped in a deceptive illusion of her childhood home. Her father Alarin accuses her of killing her sister Frelina and mother Miryn. She breaks free of the mental trick and realizes she is chained in a ship’s cellar with Frelina, Alarin, and the Fae Siphon Twins, Kerym and Thissian.

King Rioner, Lessia’s cruel uncle, has captured them. The sadistic guard Torkher Sordensen tortures the prisoners. He carves Merrick’s name into Lessia’s flesh to break her resolve.

Meanwhile, Merrick sails aboard the warship of Loche, the young regent of Ellow.

Loche admits he still has feelings for Lessia but accepts her choice of Merrick. Raine, a tragic Fae mind-bender, warns that the wyvern control stone only responds to pure-hearted wielders.

As they sail, the mate bond between Merrick and Lessia begins to sputter and fade. In captivity, Rioner forces Alarin to open a magical seal. Rioner demands Alarin use his magic-undoing abilities to break the mate bond between Lessia and Merrick.

Alarin refuses to betray his daughter. Rioner slits Alarin’s throat before Lessia’s eyes. Lessia is knocked unconscious after trying to attack her uncle.

When she awakens, she finds her father dead. To escape her chains, she crushes her own hand with a rusty iron clamp. With broken bones and blood, she slips out of the iron cuffs, grabs a sword, and escapes to the deck.

Merrick, Raine, and Ardow have leapt into the sea. They are rescued by Ydren, a young violet sea wyvern bonded with Lessia. They land on Rioner’s ship and engage in a brutal skirmish. Merrick defeats Torkher, breaking his arms.

Lessia uses her soul-merged stone to command Ydren to douse the enemy’s fire wielder. Rioner escapes by being swallowed by water. Lessia slits Torkher’s throat to avenge her torture.

The survivors bury Alarin at sea. The ancient wyvern elder Auphore refuses to let the wyverns fight because of distrust in the Rantzier bloodline. Auphore agrees only to bring the wyverns as witnesses. The group travels to the sacred Lakes of Mirrors to seek a way to save Lessia from the prophecy.

At the Lakes of Mirrors, the water forms surreal walls and ceilings. Merrick meets Preysaih, god of death, who confirms that the prophecy requires Lessia’s death, though a hidden way to save her exists at a severe cost.

Lessia meets Evrene, god of mind, who explains her life was orchestrated to experience love and pain without seeking power.

Frelina meets Zharra, god of life, who taunts her with fears of dying alone. The gods strip Raine of his ability to drink alcohol as punishment for wasting his life. Frelina comforts Raine, and they find a passionate connection.

Meanwhile, Loche, Kerym, Thissian, Zaddock, and others search for rebel forces near Ellow. The rebel leader Meyah boards their ship.

Meyah is revealed to be Loche’s estranged biological mother. She mocks Loche as a useless halfling and reveals she orchestrated his life to gain empathy for shifters.

A battle erupts when Meyah’s Fae guard blinds the crew. Soria encourages Loche to fight. Kerym siphons the Fae’s magic to restore their sight. Meyah escapes by shifting into an eagle, though Loche wounds her with a thrown knife. Zaddock is wounded, but Amalise kills the remaining Fae guard to save him.

Reunited at Ellow, the group prepares for the final war. Soria and Pellie reveal they are witches, guardians of magic balance. Loche meets his mate, the fiery Fae commander Iviry. A brutal battle begins when shifters attack the cliffs as massive black birds.

Thissian sacrifices his life to protect Lessia from a giant shifter snake, dying in her arms. King Rioner returns, directing a massive one-hundred-foot wave to crush the trapped ships in the inlet. Lessia compels Merrick to let her go. She mounts Ydren and flies toward Rioner’s gilded ship.

She throws her ruby-decorated dagger, striking Rioner in the chest and killing him. The wave collapses, but Rioner stabs Lessia with Alarin’s amber-decorated dagger. Lessia dies in Merrick’s arms.

In the afterlife, Lessia meets Raine’s deceased mate, Solana. Solana explains that Raine will find happiness and healing with Frelina. Refusing to accept her death, Merrick unleashes his death-whispering magic completely. He tears down the veil between life and death to pull Lessia’s soul back to the living world.

Lessia wakes up alive. The dagger falls away. They are surrounded by thousands of kneeling, glowing souls of the dead. Soria and Pellie declare Lessia the “veiled queen” and Merrick her “soulbinder.”

This sets the stage for the final battle against fate.
