Five years after the events of The Last Thing He Told Me, Hannah Hall and her stepdaughter Bailey Michaels live under constant but subtle surveillance in Los Angeles.

Hannah has built a furniture design workshop, while Bailey works as a casting assistant and musician.

Owen Michaels appears at Hannah’s exhibition, hands her a flash drive, and gives a cryptic warning. The same morning, news breaks that Nicholas Bell, Bailey’s grandfather and a former mob lawyer, has died of a heart attack at his Texas home.

Bailey receives a frantic call from her uncle Charlie telling her to flee. Hannah and Bailey execute a prepared escape plan with burner phones, decoy cars, and a private plane from Napa.

US Marshal Grady Bradford warns them that the organization now led by Frank’s children Quinn and Teddy no longer honors the original deal.

Flashbacks show Owen living in New Zealand under the name Luke. He works at a vineyard and spends his nights mapping the organization’s vulnerabilities. Owen and Nicholas eventually form a secret alliance, meeting in Hawaii to plan permanent safety for Hannah and Bailey.

Hannah and Bailey fly to Paris, following clues on the flash drive. In a room at La Réserve, they find Nicholas Bell alive. Nicholas explains that he faked his death to draw out the organization’s new leaders and force a final confrontation while he could still manage the outcome.

The climax takes place at Frank Campano Pointe II’s 80th birthday party in Èze. Nicholas and Hannah confront Frank, Quinn, and Teddy in a private room.

Using data collected by Owen, Nicholas blackmails the siblings into a permanent ceasefire. Frank shoots Nicholas in the shoulder to satisfy his children, but lets him leave.

Nicholas travels to Tuscany with his bodyguard Seth to hide and recover, effectively disappearing from the world. Hannah goes to a marina in Antibes, where she reunites with Owen and Bailey on a boat.

The family plans a new life in Los Alamos, California.
