The Second Son Summary: The Full Story
Spoiler warning: this section describes the plot, including the ending.
The novel opens in Colombia during a joint anti-terrorism operation. A Colombian Aerospace Force Black Hawk carrying State Department intelligence analyst Michael Burke and an FBI agent is shot down over the jungle.
Before the crash, Michael writes a list of suspects. He fears a hidden entity called FATHOM has infiltrated the mission.
In New York, Michael’s younger brother Chase works as head sommelier at Chrysalis, a restaurant inside the Chrysler Building. Chase is a former Army PSYOPS NCO and boxer who served ten months in a military stockade and received a bad conduct discharge.
The discharge followed an incident in Djibouti where he struck an officer, moments after he single-handedly saved his squad, including the nephew of Secretary of State Connor Williams. Chase later earned a master’s degree from MIT.
Chase visits his mother, Henrietta Enfield Burke, at Havenwood Retreat, a private care facility in West Hartford, Connecticut. She lives there with advanced dementia. His father, Ambassador Robert Burke, died six months earlier in a suspicious plane crash.
Outside the facility, Secretary of State Connor Williams tells Chase that the Colombian search has ended, that Michael is presumed dead, and that internal investigators suspect Michael leaked operational intelligence to criminal syndicates.
Chase refuses to accept that his brother was a traitor. He decides to investigate on his own.
That evening, Chrysalis head chef David asks Chase to cover a shift. Congresswoman Tanya Hemsworth, a former NYPD detective who built her career taking down the Cipriani mob syndicate, is dining alone.
A heavily armed hit squad led by former Italian marine Antonio Bonetti storms the restaurant to abduct her. Chase uses his combat training and a steak knife to kill several attackers.
Outside, British mercenary sniper Brad Gray shoots Tanya through the shoulder and executes one of the mob hitmen before fleeing in a black Suburban. Chase saves Tanya’s life before emergency services arrive.
NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force detectives Alice Doyle and James Campbell question Chase. Doyle treats him as a hero. Campbell accuses Chase and Michael of being dirty foreign agents.
After his release, Chase returns to his apartment, where Brad and Nigel Gray ambush him. Police arrive during the confrontation. Nigel is killed in a shootout.
Chase wounds Brad with a thrown chef’s knife before Brad escapes. Chase gathers cash, passport documents, his SIG pistol, and evidence from Nigel’s body, then flees into the night.

Working underground, Chase contacts Connor Williams for backdoor access to the State Department’s Intelligence and Research databases to identify the hitmen.
Meanwhile, Detective Campbell is revealed as corrupt, taking orders from Curtis McGraw, managing director of Havenwood Retreat. When Doyle finds Campbell hiding evidence from the Gray brothers’ van, he abducts her and locks her in her car trunk.
Campbell plans to murder Doyle and frame Chase. Doyle fights back and overpowers him.
Chase identifies Bonetti, tracks him to a Lower Manhattan loft, and interrogates him at gunpoint. Bonetti reveals that imprisoned mob boss Judah Stine ordered the Chrysalis attack to make an example of Tanya Hemsworth on camera.
In London, elite mercenary Damien Gray, older brother to Brad and Nigel, receives a call from a client using a voice modulator. The client lies, claiming Chase tortured and executed Brad.
Driven by revenge, Damien travels to Connecticut with an armed private security team, including Mac, Nate, and Ollie, to hunt Chase down.
Chase deduces that Havenwood Retreat is the center of the conspiracy. He and Detective Doyle converge on the Connecticut facility.
On arrival, facility director Curtis McGraw is executed by a sniper. Chase enters McGraw’s office and confronts his mother, Henrietta.
Henrietta drops her dementia facade entirely. She reveals she is a high-ranking director for FATHOM, a global criminal syndicate that manipulates governments and corporate empires.
She confesses that she never loved her family and that she orchestrated the deaths of her husband Robert and her son Michael because they were uncovering FATHOM’s operations.
Henrietta draws a concealed revolver to kill Chase. Before she can fire, a sniper round shatters the window and strikes her dead.
The sniper steps inside and unmasks himself. It is Michael Burke, who survived the Colombian crash and has been working in the shadows to dismantle FATHOM.
Outside, Damien Gray’s mercenary team attacks the grounds. Chase, Michael, and Doyle work together to eliminate the threat.
Michael explains that Henrietta oversaw FATHOM’s East Coast financial empire and money-laundering operations.
Connor Williams clears Chase and Michael of all charges. He forms a covert black-ops task force of Michael, Chase, and Doyle to wage war against FATHOM globally.
In an epilogue set in Tehran, Iranian intelligence officer Ali Reza, operating under the alias Mehmet Demir, reports to Minister Khatib.
Iran and FATHOM engineered the Chrysalis attack not to kill Tanya Hemsworth but to transform her into a national hero, boosting her poll numbers and positioning her as a viable U.S. vice presidential candidate.
The long-term political manipulation scheme is known as Project XIII.
