When the Storm Passes Summary: A Storm-Bound Thriller

A Writer, an Empty Island, and a Storm With No Way Out

Roberto Lobeira comes to the Isle of Ons in the dead of winter with one goal: silence. The Galician island empties out after October, its ferries stop running, and its few dozen residents know each other far too well.

He is a bestselling author and former war reporter carrying untreated trauma, and he plans to write his way through it.

What he walks into instead is an eighty-year feud between two families, a locked-room island cut off by a hurricane, and a secret worth 75 million euros.

When the Storm Passes by Manel Loureiro is a psychological thriller built on isolation, superstition, and greed. Translated from Spanish by Thomas Bunstead, it follows six days in which a quiet retreat becomes a fight to stay alive.

TL;DR: Six Days, One Island, No Exit

  • The setup: A traumatized novelist rents a cottage on a near-deserted Atlantic island to finish a book.
  • The spark: A waterproof bundle of drug money washes ashore, and the island’s two rival clans immediately decide to keep it.
  • The pressure: A hurricane destroys the cell tower, cutting the island off from the mainland entirely.
  • The danger: A cartel hitman, two blackmailing lighthouse keepers, and a hidden serial killer are all on the same small island.
  • Key themes: isolation, greed, inherited hatred, folklore used as camouflage, and trauma.

Readers who like storm-bound locked-room mysteries, coastal noir, and thrillers where the setting itself is a threat will find the premise familiar and the pressure constant. The novel runs on escalation rather than slow burn.

When the Storm Passes Summary: The Deep Dive

Spoiler warning: the following section covers the full plot, including the ending.

Roberto Lobeira hires a fishing boat from Bueu to reach Ons, where he has rented a cottage for a month of writing. Minutes after landing, he intervenes when Luis Docampo bullies fourteen-year-old Diego Freire on the breakwater.

The boy’s sister, Antía Freire, thanks him. The Docampos do not, and the hostility begins immediately.

That night, Roberto finds a severed rabbit head on his doorstep, placed with care and completely drained of blood.

Local poacher Víctor Pampín and the reclusive Elvira Couto tell him the island considers him marked by a curse known as the dead man’s kiss.

Walking the beach the next morning with Diego, Roberto spots a yellow bundle tied to a buoy offshore. Diego pulls him from the undertow when the freezing sea nearly takes him, and together they drag the container ashore.

Inside is 75 million euros in euros, dollars, and Swiss francs, packed in a waterproof drop left by smugglers.

Roberto argues for calling the Guardia Civil, but clan patriarch Ramón Docampo refuses, saying islanders settle problems their own way.

When Pampín tries to uncover the wheelbarrow, Diego strikes him with a hammer to protect his family. Luis Docampo then finishes the job with three blows to the skull and blackmails Roberto over the fingerprints on the weapon.

Álvaro Ibaibarriaga, the chief lighthouse keeper, has watched everything through his telescope. He demands a third of the money and threatens to expose Roberto if he refuses.

Storm Armand arrives with seventy-mile-per-hour winds and thirty-foot waves. Lightning destroys the cell tower, and the island loses all contact with the mainland.

In the dark, Roberto moves the duffel bags out of the church and hides them inside the 1924 tomb of Erundina Quintáns in the old cemetery. He is now the only person who knows where the money is.

The bodies start appearing. Ricardo Docampo is found decapitated and disemboweled, nailed to an oak tree, and Elvira Couto is found beheaded in her home.

Convinced the Freires are killing his family for the fortune, Luis Docampo corners Roberto at the edge of the Devil’s Hole, a chasm over forty yards deep. When Roberto refuses to talk, Luis shoves him in.

At that exact moment, a rogue wave surges up the shaft, breaks his fall, and washes him into the sea. He survives, unconscious and kept afloat by his air-filled parka.

Antonio “Varatorta” Vázquez, the lighthouse cook and assistant keeper, drags him onto the deserted islet of Onza. In a stone sea cave, he reveals himself as a lifelong serial killer who has disguised his ritual killings behind the legend of the Tangaraño.

He admits to leaving the rabbit head, and to killing Ricardo Docampo, Elvira Couto, skipper Chuco Barreiros, and Luis Docampo. Roberto breaks his restraints, torches the cave with a gasoline drum, and swims back to Ons on an empty oil drum.

Reunited with Antía and Diego, he sets the Docampo restaurant on fire as a signal, and the explosion throws a smoke plume visible across the estuary. Meanwhile, cartel hitman Osvaldo Salazar arrives with three armed men and takes Helena Freire and Tristán Docampo hostage.

Roberto stages a standoff in front of the lighthouse, openly borrowing from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and trades the money for the hostages. Inside, Ibaibarriaga strangles Varatorta, then dies of a gunshot wound himself.

The cartel gunmen flee by speedboat, but their driver flips the vessel over a sandbank wave. All four drown. A Guardia Civil helicopter lands shortly after.

A year later in Madrid, Roberto signs copies of his bestselling novel Stormy Night, walking with a permanent limp from his knee injury. He lives with Antía and Diego, and it emerges that Diego is Antía’s biological son, raised as her brother.

The islanders kept their version of events, telling police that the cartel and the lighthouse keepers fought over the drugs. Roberto had swapped the real cash for tourist brochures before the handover.

The 75 million euros went into a safe-deposit box and was quietly used to rebuild homes, fund businesses, and stock bank accounts for both families. When the surviving Osvaldo Salazar confronts Roberto at the signing with a gun, Roberto reveals he has moved the funds into a Cayman Islands account in Osvaldo’s name.

An automated email will send lighthouse security footage to Osvaldo’s paranoid cartel boss if anything happens to Roberto or his family. Checkmated, Osvaldo takes his signed copy and leaves.
